Indian Sporting Achievement of the Year

Post by Sin Hombre »

I was thinking about this but the Thomas Cup win almost certainly will be the sporting achievement of the year for Indian sports in 2022.

What would be that for previous years?

Some to get the discussion going
1983 - Cricket WC win
1987 - Davis Cup final, including beating Australia in Sydney in the semifinals
1996 - Paes' historic bronze
1998 - Sachin's landmark Desert Storm performances
2000 - Malleswari's silver
2003 - Anju Bobby George winning India's first medal at the Athletics world championships
2004 - Rathore's silver (or Sehwag's 300 in Multan)
2006 - Jeev winning the Volvo Masters (and entering the top 30 in the world)
2007 - Anand becomes the undisputed World Champion in chess for the first time (or the T20 WC win)
2008 - Bindra's gold
2010 - Anand retaining the WC after needing to drive 40 hours after the Icelandic volcano (or Atwal winning a PGA tour event)
2011 - Cricket WC win
2012 - Sushil Kumar's silver at the Olympics
2013 - Cricket Champions Trophy win ? (not a great year)
2016 - Sindhu winning a silver at the Olympics
2019 - Sindhu winning the World Championship (or the first series win in Australia)
2021 - Neeraj's historic gold or the Gabba win to beat a full-strength Australian team with a lot of missing players or winning a medal in hockey after 3 decades?
2022 - Thomas Cup win?

Neeraj's gold hands down. No questions about the other things.

Nice list. Can add a few to this.
1985- World Championship of Cricket win
1971- the twin test triumphs in West Indies and England
1960- Krishnan reached Wimbledon semis
1999- Lee-Hesh win 2 Slams and reach finals of all 4
1966 and 74 Davis Cup finals
1980 and 2001 All England wins of Prakash and Gopi

1986 PT Usha wins 4 golds at the Asian Games
1962 Asian Games football gold
1958 Milka Singh's gold at the Commonwealth Games

...... And many more
But in 2022 one achievement that we haven't adequately talked about is Dipika Pallikal winning the world women's and mixed squash championship

1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964 - gold medals in hockey. 1980 gold had an asterisk attached.
1951 - Asiad gold in football. (Sailen Manna, S Mewalal, Chandan Singh were the stars; Iran won silver, Japan bronze :-) ).
1958 - Wilson Jones wins world (amateur) billiards championship. He also won in 1964.
1960 tie between Krishnan making the Wimbledon singles SF and Olympic silver in hockey.
1961 Krishnan making the Wimbledon singles SF again.
1962 Asiad gold in football (Chuni Goswami leading).
1966 Davis Cup final, beating Brazil in the penultimate round.
1971: India world champs of test cricket (beating WI and England on their home turf, after latter beat Aus in Aus).
1974: Davis Cup final (& moral winners, since apartheid South Africa were boycotted in final) beating Aus, USSR in previous rounds.
1977: Michael Ferreira wins the world amateur billiards championship. (He repeated in 1981 and 1983).
1980: Prakash Padukone all-England badminton champion (at a time when it was the Wimbledon of badminton).
1981: Prakash Padukone wins the badminton World Cup in KL, Malaysia. (It was to later evolve into the world championship).
1987: Sunil Gavaskar first man to make 10,000 runs in test cricket (nobody else had made even 9000 before him); tied with India making the Davis Cup final, beating Argentina, Israel and Australia. (1984: Gavaskar the first man to make 30 test centuries).

Why is 1983 World Cup cricket win not listed by either Rajit or PKB?

I didn't repeat the ones Sin Hombre had. I added onto what he had written. Few I had missed out would be:
1947: Prakash Nath reaches All England final
1952: KD Jadhav's bronze at the Olympics
1954: Krishnan winning Junior Wimbledon
1956: Mankad and Roy putting on 413 for the 1st wicket (though same year Indian won the hockey gold)
1959: Krishnan winning Queens, US Hard Court and the West of England Championship
1965: Krishan's win at the River Oaks event
1968: India's first test series win abroad against New Zealand
1973: Vijay Amritraj wins the Volvo International beating Connors and Laver
1976: India esp. Gavaskar, Vishwanath and Amarnath chase down 400 in the 4th innings of a test in West Indies. Incidentally the loss in this test made Lloyd set off the Fire in Babylon. Same year Vijay Amritraj won the WCT, Memphis event
1979: Ramesh Krishnan wins Junior French and Wimbledon to be world Junior No. 1
1982: Womens's Hockey gold at the Asian Games
1992: Geet Sethi wins World Professional Billiards
1993: Frejus (need I say more)
2001: Very Very Special achievement in Kolkata
2005: Bhupathi wins 2 Men's doubles Slams
2015: Sania Mirza wins 2 Womens Doubles Slams (add Australian Open in 2016)

Because it was the first item mentioned in the post that started this thread. There can be little doubt about the massive significance of that win, both as a sports achievement and a transformative cultural event.
