^^^ Not terrible so far. Do we have a chance to break our record of 16 top-8 finishes this time, Sameer?

Deepika, Atanu, Manu, etc are close... Maybe Anirban Lahiri, but two more rounds to go and Golf is very unpredictable (Aditi also can make a top-8) ... Maybe hockey women can... Then Amit, Vinesh, Bajrang, Neeraj, and maybe Kamalpreet? Who else has a chance?

Neeraj Chopra, Ravi Dahiya in wrestling. Anshu, Sonal outside hopes in wrestling, but it is a draw of 16 in wrestling. So, one win will take you to top 8.

Do not see anyone else. Decent chance to cross 16. But, really hope somehow we are able to get to 4-5 medals.

If around 7 or 8 more people make the final-8 along with the 5 that are alive so far, I am sure we will get at least 2 or 3 more medals from those 12-13 people. Two wrestling medals would be nice (and repechages can come to the rescue if one is lucky, like Sushil the first time).

Maan, if these players learn that Jay actually cares for top-8 finishes, they will get all tight in the pre-quarters and choke up. :-)

^^^ Haha, there is no doubt about it. But really, this is a much better measure of general improvement in our Olympics performance than medals which are really a bit of a crap-shoot with mental issues and all that. I was hoping some 3-4 Olympics ago that our sports levels would be going up to 30+ top-8 performances by now. We are still under 20. Once we are at 30 to 40 levels, I am sure the expected value of medals would be somewhere in the 10 or 12 range with a variance of plus/minus 3. Now it is like 4 average plus or minus 2.

One more. Women's hockey in the QF. That is 12 now.

I am pretty sure Kamalpreet Kaur will be in the top-8 in discus in the end, out of the 12 in the final (but anyway, the 2nd in qualifying itself counts as an honorary top-8 finish - and her distance of 64m will probably be in the top-8 distances there). But we can add her to the numbers later.

If Kamalpreet chokes in the final and is not in the top 8, we should not add her however much we have preet for her and however komal we want to be. She needs to do kamal in order to be in the list. Here's hoping for an unexpected, completely out-of-the-blue medal though. Not going to happen, but hoping.

If she chokes and finishes 12th with a 60m throw, we shouldn't add her, but if she does above 63m and finishes say 10th, I would add her as an honorary 8th if her 64m in the qualifying is still among the top-8 of the best throws there.

It won't be an out-of-the-blue medal though, but for our normal expectation of a poor performance at Olympics. She had shown distances this year which would be medal possibilities. Just that we weren't sure if they weren't "home-cooked" distances or even vegetarian distances, and didn't expect her to get close to 64m at the Olympics where home-cooking and vegetables can't help. Now that she has shown in multiple throws that she has 64m in her, then she is legit! So it is no longer a big surprise if she hits a 65 and gets a medal (she has done 65+ this year too)

Good, she came in 6th. Would have been better if she medalled. Maybe next time.

It still seems like boxing, weightlifting, badminton, hockey, and shooting. With boxing and weightlifting leaning towards women's is where we should fund. We should look at other cheap sports and throw a lot of people into that.
