She does make it. Great news coming in of Deepa Karmakar becoming the first Indian gymnast to qualify for Olympics at the qualifying event today.

She had a overall score of 52.698 and improved a great deal on the routines other than Vault which is her speciality.

Well done.

Following her qualification, today Dipa won the gold in Vault event in the Olympic qualifiers.

These are her scores today -

1st attempt

Difficulty - 7
Execution - 8.1
Vault score - 15.1

2nd attempt

Difficulty - 6
Execution - 8.566
Vault score - 14.566

Final Score - 14.833

The best of world's gymnasts might not be there at this event as they would have already qualified. Still, it looks like Dipa could be among top 8-10 gymnasts in the world in vault. Are we looking at a surprise medallist at Rio ?

Thanks Saniafan for those details. Looking at scores, she has improved over her world championships scores but will need to improve more to get among medals at Rio.

This is another article on Dipa's feat -

Well, we did not update this thread after Deepa's great show in Rio where she came in fourth in vault.

This is a nice article in the talent which is coming up in Tripura -

Ashmita and Abhishek, the two gymnasts primed to surpass Dipa Karmakar
"I believe Ashmita is a notch above Dipa. The kind of things she does on the vault at 15 is incredible. Dipa used to do them too, but Ashmita has a level of perfection which is extremely rare. She will go a long way," Nandi tells TOI Sports .
Abhishek performs the back body 360 vault with precision, the 720 version of which Dipa did in Rio Olympics. Apart from her, he is the only gymnast performing this and many such vaults in Tripura. I am sure he will be in top-three if he gets to compete at the top level," his coach Gourango Chandra Pal says. "He has done exceptionally well in school games even though he hasn't been in junior events yet. Had there been a competition at the Indian Under-15 level, then people would have known how special Abhishek is. He has feet movement like no other."
Nice to hear that although it will be difficult to say right now if these gymnasts come up at the level of Deepa at world level.

She was indeed a contender for the Olympic medal Sameer - as you wisely predicted almost 2 years back and started this thread!!
Kudos for noticing her then, and for the recent "Ashmita and Abhishek, the two gymnasts primed to surpass Dipa Karmakar"

Dipa Karmakar blew out her ACL and is out for some time. Injury She will miss the Asian Gymnastics Championship.

Recovery from an ACL surgery normally takes quite a bit of time. In US professional sports, it is generally a year or more before an athlete is able to perform at their previous top level even if they can get back to training earlier.

Not sure of the best from the world were there but this is good news for Indian gymnastics -

Yes it is indeed a good news. But just to compare, Dipa's score used to be between 14.5 to 15 while Aruna won with 13.69. Top names from USA, Russia,Korea seems to be missing here.
