Indian Gymnastics thread

Post by sameerph »

It does not like we had a thread for Gymnastics in our forum. Must be because we never had anyone even close to Asian or commonwealth standards, forget about world standards.

But, now we have someone who is getting closer and closer to world standards.

Dipa Karmakar finished 10th in qualification on Vault and is second reserve for the final at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Nanning, China. This is the best finish ever achieved by an Indian gymnast (male or female) at the World Championship

Dipa is a vault specialist and won a bronze in CWG and finished 4th in the Asian games in a world class field.

Here, she was lying 82nd after her first vault but waltzed up to 10th after her Produnova vault which is her speciality with a high level of difficulty,

It this girl can improve upon her first vault, she can go way up, probably even a contender for an olympic medal. Lets hope there is some coach who can do that her and for India.

Just for completeness, in 2010 Commonwealth Games, Ashish Kumar got a silver and a bronze. And famously, the federation asked if this was what the coach could deliver. Only a bronze?

Dipa Karmakar is not only at Top 10 World Level , she is also on to a very gutsy and dangerous path with her attempts at the Produnova

I read an IE article about this, calling it the dark arts of Gymnastics. Only 4 women in history have been able to land the Produnova and one of them is the pioneer who originated this move, Elena Produnova ! And if you look at the other 3, Dipa is the closest to perfecting the same !

Follow our article on the same at

Yes,Prasen. Ashish also won a bronze in 2010 Asian games. So, he can really be called the pioneer at this level in Indian gymnastics. But, it seems he has regressed after that.

Hope Deepa is able to take the next step at world level.

This is a nice article with a lot of details on Deepa's coach and our foreign coach -

Vaulting ambition, soaring dreams
It was this one man’s inspired decision to start Karmakar out on the 7.0 Difficulty-level (D-Level) world class Produnova vault which fetched her the CWG medal, and his stubborn persistence in pushing the 21-year-old to pursue this complicated routine that is getting Indian gymnastics a seriously curious glance from the rest of the world. If you thought the coach and the girl are fixated on just that one vault, Nandi has lined up immaculate plans to take Karmakar to the Olympics by adding other variations to her arsenal.

The plan, though, is to shore up D-levels of the first vault that Dipa performs, so that the average automatically shoots up. The coach is once again setting the bar higher. Currently, Dipa starts competition with a 5.20 difficulty-worth Kim, a Tsukahara tucked or stretched full twist. Nandi is keen on attempting a more complicated variant — a Zamolodchikova, which at D-levels of 6.30 involves a double turn on dismount. The half-turn onto the horse and a complete back salto with a 360 degree turn around the vertical axis which she earlier threw, is now upgraded to a 720 degree turn around the vertical axis. “On the Produnova, with better execution, she can increase her scores by 0.8 or 0.9 and go up to 15.900. If she gets 15.000 on her first vault, she’ll have a very good score to work with,” the coach explains.

Another good performance by Deepa which earns her mention in the FIG official article as prospective world finalist .

Japanese win big at Asian Championships in Hiroshima
Though dominated by Japan and China, the Asian competition did not end without a few surprises. India's Dipa Karmakar, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist from 2014, solidified her status as a prospective World finalist on Vault by landing an improved Produnova vault, the hardest currently being done in Women's Gymnastics. Combined with her full-twisting Tsukahara, the Produnova earned Karmakar another bronze.

:Offtopic: Indians (NRIs) do pretty well in gymnastics as I think several have made the relatively world class US team in recent years. Latest in that group is Akash Modiwho medaled in the recent World University games.

Another piece of history in Gymnastics for us as Deepa Karmakar reached the final of vaults event at the world championships at Glasgow. She finished 7th and qualifies as among top 8.

Well done, Deepa.

It seems as though she will have to get a medal though to qualify for Rio olympics.

Deepa Karmakar finished a very creditable 5th in the vault final at the world championships in Glasgow yesterday -

Dipa Karmakar settles for fifth place in 2015 World Gymnastics Championships

Unfortunately, to qualify for Rio Olympics, she either had to get a medal in vault or finish in top 25 overall ( for all events) and she finished 26th. :-(

This is the earlier report on overall competitions -

Dipa Karmakar’s leap of faith, into the unknown
She had faltered on the Balance Beam — the toes never assured and slipping in uncertainty once, and sloppily landed on her backside very early on the Uneven Bars before she retrieved her nerve to finish her routine. She would finish an obscure 103rd in the all-around with a total of 49.966 (15.100 — Vault; 10.000 — Uneven Bars; 12.333 — Balance Beam; 12.533 — Floor Exercise). The Tripura girl was 26th on the table to make it to the Test event that will serve as qualification for the Rio Olympics, missing the grade of Top 24 by 0.5 points. She was watching her Olympic dream vamooze, her bounding leap on the Vault brought down shattering by her lacklustre showing on the other apparatus.

Our first-ever world-class female gymnast! I hope she manages to make it to Rio, because she might well get us a medal in a most unlikely sport.

If there is anyone that deserves to be "Rajeev Khel Ratna", it got to be Deepa Karmakar :notworthy: . She made it this far even when every possible thing is staked against her. I really hope she makes it to Rio.
