Congrats to Kashyap for taking the gold in badminton singles! (Were the Malaysians represented in full? If they were, this is an even bigger achievement!).

Vikas Gowda's gold medal was the other truly exciting outcome, although his distance was marginally less than what he achieved to take the silver at Delhi.

The boxers have been a bit disappointing, and the shooters good but inconsistent. Overall, a satisfying performance -- especially with signs of a revival in the silver-retaining hockey team.

World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia had pulled out due to injury after having been expected to compete and to be the No. 1 seed in men's singles.

No LCW and no Saina ; otherwise I think the Commonwealth was fully represented.

OK, thanks Mugundan. I noticed that Lee Chong-wei was missing, but world #17 Chong Wei-feng was the top seed in singles, while Kashyap was the second seed. Gurusai Datt did his team-mate a favour by knocking out the top seed in the QF, but Derek Wong of SIngapore proved a surprise performer, beating third-seeded Srikanth Kidambi in the QF and Gurusai in the SF.

Good that Kashyap was able to stop him -- and thereby emulate Prakash Padukone and Syed Modi in taking the singles title.

Great job by Kashyap! There was a lot of critisism re: Kashyap (in this forum too) but I still think he is the best male shuttler in India. He needs to get more consistent though. Srikanth and Guru are hugely talended but they are close behind.

As SSP said above, only Judo was added this time around. So, we need to exclude those 4 medals from this year's tally to get a true picture. So, comparing those sports which were there both times, we have 60 medals this time as compared to 69 last time which is reasonable considering loss of home advantage this time. However, in terms of golds there is a bigger comedown from 22 to 15 which is due to low conversion rate from silvers to gold.

Sportswise, big drop in golds has come only in shooting & boxing. Shooting has come down from 10 golds to only 4 this time. However, total number of medals there have remained the same as last time i.e 17 (excluding pairs events which were not there this time.) Similarly, in boxing there were 3 golds last time which has come down to 0 this time. Total medals here have come down from 7 to 5.

It looks like fall in boxing performance has been mainly due to the boxers not being able to participate in too many international events in last couple of years due to federation ban. In shooting it looks more like a luck factor. There were 9 silver medals of which 3-4 could have easily gone to golds with a little bit of luck .We have been doing reasonably well in shooting in world cup events . So, this fall is not much of a concern. Boxing needs to rebuild in next 2 years to retain our medal hopes for next Olympics.

64 medals after the high in 2010 of 101 medals in Delhi while hosting, is not bad. A few more in Gold column as against the Silver would surely have been better.... Nice way to wrap up with a singles Gold on the last day.

I feel we under performed by about 10 medals (compared to 2010) when judo and par-weightliftning medals are excluded from the final tally. Crucially we lost far too many finals in wrestling and boxing. Saina's absence robbed us of a likely gold in badminton. We also lost 2 golds in TT compared to 2010 and shooting was way below expectations. Still pleased to see 60+ medals.

Compared to our (mild) disappointments, Australians must be very annoyed at coming 2nd to the poms and winning only 49 golds. They won 74 golds in 2010. Canada and Scotland improved their performances.
