Indian Sports Trusts Thread ...
I laud Lakshmi Niwas Mittal for this fine initiative to promote Indian sporting champions. He has created a Rs400 million trust to help potential champion sportspersons from India:

Why should it be difficult to comprehend that? Mittal is a patriotic Indian, as he has always made clear. Despite doing business in some faraway countries (Indonesia first, then Trinidad, Mexico, Canada, Kazakhstan, eastern Germany, Ireland, the US, Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Venezuela) Mittal has retained his Indian passport and always carried it with pride. The vast majority (probably 90%-plus) of the senior personnel in his enormous worldwide steel empire consist of Indians. Last week, he announced a scholarship fund for emerging-economy students, this week he has announced this wonderful initiative for Indian sports. Kudos to him!!nothingnew wrote:Somehow it is hard for me to comprehend that Mittal is doing something for India without any business interests!!There are no free lunches in life so I imagine the trust will enter into a contract with the aspiring sportsperson which may include some clauses.

Joshna Chinnappa is the first beneficiary of Lakshmi Mittal's initiative. Very good choice to begin with.

A real shot in the arm for Indian sports?
Wow its really good news ... I m excited after seeing few trustees and advisory board members name - Mahesh Bhupathi (Tennis), Rahul Dravid (Cricket), Bobby George (Athletic) and Pullela Gopichand (Badminton) ... And more over they already contracted Joshna Chinappa and contacted players like Pankaj Advani (snooker), Shikha Tandon (swimming) and Anju Bobby George ... May be Saina Nehwal also get sponsorship from them ... Good initiative by Lakshmi Narain Mittal.

Incidentally, the man's name is Lakshmi Niwas Mittal.
We seem to be getting his middle name wrong (even our frontispiece story in Sports-India.com has the middle as "Narain" -- wrong!).

PKB,
I used Mr Mittal's name from the rediff link that you quoted above.
http://in.rediff.com/sports/2005/nov/08harish.htm
It appears from reading some sources that he goes by Niwas and Narain, and the Wikipedia source, if it is deemed reliable, states that he is known by both the middle names
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakshmi_Mittal
The Hindu played it safe by not using his middle name.

I will follow the lead of The Hindu and delete his middle name and use the middle initial at the main page of Sports India.

Interesting. Thanks for that, Bhushan.
What seems to have happened here is that through continuing use of the wrong middle-name, "Narain" is increasing coming to be accepted as his middle name. Much like LK Advani, whose name actually is Lal Kishenchand Advani -- but who is almost always referred to as Lal Krishna Advani when people mention his full name. Both are of course usually just known by their initials, LK and LN.

This is really a great thing to have happened to Indian sport. I wish more corporates follow Lakshmi Mittal.
Joshna is a good start. How about Saina ? I hope some tennis players get enrolled soon with Mahesh being one of the trustees.
All the best to the trust so that really the champions benefit.

I doubt if Saina will be enrolled. She is under Gopichand and he is looking for sponsorship from government to send her to Denmark!! Let us see how it goes.
PS : Gopichand is one of the trustees.

Sad to see there is already a controversy in what seemed a boon for Indian sports.

Well, tht is wht I was wondering. I mean I thought it is a voluntary organization. If they expect some thing back, isn't it pure business. That is why I was surprised when there was an article tht Mittal started a trust without any business interest!!
