Union Sports Minister, Thespian Legend, Sunil Dutt no more

Post by mugu »

The Sports Minister passed away this morning in Mumbai of a heart attack. The sportsmen and women will surely miss him. For, he was a man who could be approached, who listened to them. He didn't do anything great for Indian sport, though there were early indications that he would bring about a sea change. Being an honest man much more could have been expected of him. Somehow, after an initial flurry, just prior to the Athens Olympics, his enthusiasm seemed to die down a little. He was not particularly liked by the federations, but sportspersons who came into contact with him were always impressed.
A great secularist, social worker and patriot is no more. May his soul rest in peace.

That is bad news to wake up to. May his soul rest in peace.

As mugu says, among all the sports ministers we have had for a while, he was one on whom we had some hopes though he could not have done a whole lot, thanks to the federations not giving him much of a chance.

Very bad news. May his soul rest in peace.

Yes, though he was not able to do much, as Mugu said he was a man who could be approached, who listened to them. His sudden demise is a big loss to Indian sports. He was very instrumental in getting sponsorship Harikrishna, when he needed it the most.

All of a sudden a very sad news.

A nice on on Duttsaab

Quote from Deccan Chronicle: -
Sportspersons from all over the country had been flocking to the capital from the past few days, most getting ready to meet their favourite minister, others busy with their respective camps. But not in the their wildest of dreams had they thought that only a day before they were to meet Sunil Dutt, that the news of his demise would leave them in tears. V.S. Surekha, who recently set the national record in pole vault, could not believe her ears.

“I got the news from a friend at 1 pm, and I just could not believe it. It was only when I saw it on the TV that the news actually percolated through. Indian shooting team coach Sunny Thomas who was also at the Nehru Stadium recalled, “at the Athens Games, we all wanted to click a picture of him, but you won’t believe it. Before we could do it, he took our pictures with his own camera saying — let me take yours first, it’s more important.”

Although during Mr Sunil Dutt's short tenure as the Sports Minister, Indian sports did not shine spectacularly but he will be remembered as a Sports Minister who tried to change the way things are done in India. I get the impression that he was the Sports Minister "for" and "of" the athletes. The athletes had a person who would listen to them.

I salute you, Mr Dutt.

Why can't ANYBODY who listens to athletes and care for them ever last in Indian sports? .. It is either politics, or it is personal reasons, or in the saddest cases, death.

We are just so snake-bit in sports it is not even funny.

The demise os Shri. Sunil Dutt is a great loss to Indian sport. He wanted to promote sports and made ways to help player by giving instant incentives for their achievement in the respective fields. He was one of the very few ppl who gave importance to athletics...It will be very hard to find a person like him.......

I am merging the second thread to the original one that mugu had started which was in the right place (The general chit chat section is for non-sports topics).

Oh Ok. It is Priya Dutt, daughter of Sanjay Dutt. Cool probsbly she can do something for sports. Does anyone know how old is she?

I would have loved to see some one who is passionate about sports don this role :( , but these days politics has become more or less heirarchy thing. Sad

We can't do much about it, let us hope for the best.
