Re: Indian Swimming Thread ...
^^ Apeksha Fernanades broke her own national record with a time of 2.18.18 in 200M butterfly to qualify for final of world junior Championships in Lima, Peru.
With that she also qualified for the final and became first Indian women to qualify for junior world final.

Re: Indian Swimming Thread ...
Apeksha could clock only 2.19+ in the final to finish 8th.
She still has lot of time to cover to get into even Asian Games contention. Asian Games medals go ar around 2.09-2.10 in this event which needs her to shave off around 0.10 sec. Apeksha has shaven off 0.5 sec in last 6 months or so in last 6 months but next 0.10+ will be difficult I guess. Not possible for next year Asian Games.
Still a good start for her. Only 2 other Indian swimmers have reached final at world juniors - Veerdhawal Khade in 2008 and Srihari Nataraj in 2019. Khade subsequently won a medal at Asian Games. Hope Srihari Nataraj can do the same in next year Asian games

Yeah I think there is some confusion with the numbers. She needs to shave off 10s to reach Asian standards, which sounds near impossible to me, unless she goes on a spinach-eating spree (or follow the Chinese special diet). Her shaving off 0.5s in the past should not matter.

Re: Indian Swimming Thread ...
Right. 2.19 may mean 2 minutes and 19 seconds and she needs to reduce it to 2 min 10 secs or so. She may have cut down on 5 seconds in the past?

Re: Indian Swimming Thread ...
10 seconds will be a big challenge to cut off before Asian games! Do we know the new dates for asian games?
The one place where u can easily makes seconds in swimming is your start! Change to your start and flip turn (3 of them) could easily see her make those seconds (assuming she is lacking there)

Re: Indian Swimming Thread ...
As of now Asian games are scheduled on 23rd September 2023 to 8th October 2023.
It was my mistake to state Apeksha needs to cut only 0.10 sec. She has to cut down 10 sec which does not look probable although she has cut down about 5 sec in last 6 months or so. Best case for her would be to cut about 5 sec more with which she can make the final at Asian games. She is still only 17, so realistic for her would be to aim for a medal at next Asian games in 4 years time.

Re: Indian Swimming Thread ...
You are right, sameer. Asian record for 200m butterfly 2:01 seconds way back in 2009 at-an age of 21 years. And ladt asian game winner was 20.
Butterfly is also the most demanding stroke. Lets hope she progress well.

It's also hard to believe that she was able to cut 5 seconds in 6 months time; maybe she had an off day earlier, or maybe the timings are not very reliable.

Very possible that she may gotten better times in 2020, but not sureMaharashtra's Apeksha Fernandes won two golds, one of those in a new National record timing, on the third day of the sub-junior and junior National Aquatic Championships at the Basavanagudi Aquatic Centre on Thursday.
Apeksha added to her gold in 200m IM on day one but setting a new record in girls' Group I 50m breaststroke, winning in 34.44s to better her own best mark set in the heats. She took the 200m butterfly gold in 2:21.63s for her second yellow metal of the day.

Re: Indian Athletics Thread ...
Here is a little bit more about him: Vedaant Madhavan committing to Virginia Tech. I hope some of these guys develop into world beaters. And this article talks about him a bit more with some references to Asian tournaments.
And, the mods please move this to the swimming thread.

Re: Indian Swimming Thread ...
His best timings are worse than the top women’s timings. Perhaps, he has Asian level potential but will likely need to improve a fair bit for that. Good luck to him!
