As for what Arjun is pointing out. Here is a quote from a related article:
Bernard, for his 50m and 100 m World record, significantly improved his start technique, getting the 1st place immediately from the start (this point improved more than half a second [from his France record in 100m free performed last season in France]. This is critical to be winner in the 50m or 100m events, where the waves generated by the rest of competitors can affect you in a magnitude (increasing your total drag) that is impossible to overcome keep up with the more quicker starters. You do not have enough energy to surpass the increased wave drag.

Good point Arjun and Kujo ... So with experiance and proper guidance he can overcome it ... Lets hope for the best.

So today in the morning Virdhawal participated in 100 Meter Freestyle heats ... He qualified for semis with clocking 50.97sec on 7th position.

Another improvement in his own national record this time in 100 Meter Freestyle, Virdhawal clocked 50.49sec to qualify for the final.

So this is his 3rd final at World Junior Swimming Championship ... Go Virdhawal.

He is truely sizzling in these championship.

Noticed that he had the slowest start among the final 8, so this is something  that he (and his coach) have to work on.  Probably didn't matter in domestic meets where he would win by a mile.  But in world class competition (where he now belongs), fractions of a second matter.

So in essence, he still has more potential areas of improvement. With more technical training especially towards better starts, he is going to be a medal contender at world class meets soon.

Sebastian Xavier on Khade
What makes him so special?

“I’ve been watching him…his body language is excellent,” explained Sebastian. “I had a strong start which gave me a huge advantage but for Khade, the whole package is good. He is tall and seems to be good in all departments.”
If Sebastian was a strong starter, maybe Veerdhawal many benefit from talking to him.

In 100 Meter Freestyle final Virdhawal finished on 7th position clocking 50.70sec ... Not good finish by his own standard, but very creditable performance by him in his first World Junior Swimming Championship.

With this (important) experience Virdhawal will gain lot of inputs to improve ... His coaches will also get to know where exactly they need to work more with him, which our many forumites pointed correctly as needed improvement areas .

Again , Veerdhawal seemed to have slowest reaction time but surprisingly seemed to be in second spot at 50 m split at 25.85 sec. I wonder what caused him to slow down after that.

Still , good performace by Veerdhawal to make finals & hopefully he will improve futher upon these timings at Bejing.

So how much of the improvements are because of these deeper pools and how much are real.  That is, wrt Phelps, etc., if we look at how much they have improved their timing and how much Virdhawal, etc. have improved theirs, we may get the real picture whether Virdhawal has made real progress or whether his boat has been lifted by a rising high-tide caused by speedos and larger, calmer pools.  Anybody who has analyzed the numbers can comment?

The performances of the Indian swimmers in the next year at different venues will tell us about the progress.  I believe that the Chinese built this special swimming pool to break a lot of the records and I had read some months back how the swimmers were enthusiastic about this pool.

I think we are giving too much importance to these "other factors".  They must have certainly contributed to the improved timings I think we should credit the swimmers and coaches for breaking all those records.
Bowman attributes it to swimmers being more agressive in these games!  Lezak's show (in the 4x100) has probably not much to do with the depth of the pool or the water drag.  He was all heart and mind there.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/13/sport ... man&st=cse

"Ten world records have fallen in the first four days of the meet. Eight world records were set at the Athens Games four years ago, and 14 fell in Sydney, Australia, in 2000. Much has been made of the pool’s state-of-the-art design, which reduces waves; and the latest high-tech suits, which reduce drag. But Bob Bowman, who coaches Phelps, said there was more behind the fast times here than met the eye. He said the fast pool and the fast suits had emboldened swimmers.

“I think people are swimming a little more aggressive,” Bowman said. “They’re taking a little bit of risk and finding out they maybe can do more than they thought possible. I think the thing that’s changed so dramatically is people’s expectations are just higher.”"

Virdhawal Khade's sponsors, GoSports India, have pointed out the following:

- Virdhawal's timings are quicker than Eamon Sullivan's timings when Eamon was 18yrs old. Sullivan (now 23yrs old) is from Australia and is the current world record holder in the 50m and 100m Freestyle.
- First Indian to break into the top 100 FINA World Ranking in 2008. Achieved it in three events this year. Currently ranked No. 57 in the 50m Butterfly, No. 79 in the 100m Freestyle and No. 105 in the 50m Freestyle per the FINA World Swimming Rankings 2008 (last updated on 15-Oct-08). In the 50m Butterfly and 100m Freestyle Virdhawal is the youngest in the top 100.
- Virdhawal's 100m Freestyle time is half a second faster than the World Youth Record.
- Currently the 3rd fastest Asian in the 50m Freestyle. His times in the 50m and 100m Freestyle would have fetched him silver medals at the Doha 2006 Asian Games.

I hope he keeps improving over the next 3 years, and is ready to medal at the London Olympics (after winning a gold in the 2010 Asiad, and some medals at the 2010 CWG in Delhi).
