India has earned eight berths in shooting at the 2004 Olympic Games.

The Olympic qualifiers include Anjali Bhagwat, Abhinav Bindra, Rajyawardhan Rathore, Mansher Singh, Manavjit Singh, Deepali Deshpande, Gagan Narang and Suma Shirur.

According to the link below, "India won six medals in the senior and 12 medals in the junior events as its medal tally read 10-4-4 at the end of the championships, which was dominated by China, who collected 28 gold medals."

I think there are 7 WCs every year. But a World Championship is once in 2 years. But I am not sure.

World Cup; World Cup Finals; World Championship

Post by BSharma »

Every year, four world cup events are conducted in 17 Olympic events for men and women in the rifle, pistol, running target and shotgun disciplines, and separate world cups can be organized according to discipline. At world cup competitions, qualification points are granted in two categories - "A" and "B" - which are added together to obtain a "World Cup Final Qualification Value". In category "A", at each world cup competition, 15 points are granted for the first ranking position, 10 points for the second, 8 points for the third, 5 points for the fourth and so on down to 1 point for the eighth ranking position. 15 points can be obtained in category B by tying the world record or setting a new world record in the normal program; for each point below the world record, one less point will be granted.

The World Cup Final is the highlight of each world cup season and was conducted for the first time in 1988. For the World Cup Final, the best eight shooters in each event with the highest qualification values will qualify.

The First World Shooting Championship was held in 1897 and initially was conducted annually and later every two years. Since 1958 it is held every four years. Maharaja Karni Singh won the silver medal in the 1962 World Championship (the reason I got interested in shooting).

The number of world-class shooters we now have is quite amazing. The sheer number of these quality shooters means that the probability of at least one shooting medal at Athens is pretty high. Mansher Singh missed a medal in trap at the World Cup event in Cairo on Tuesday by a whisker -- finishing fourth. Here's the Hindu story:
http://www.hindu.com/2004/04/15/stories ... 622100.htm

We have Anjali Vedpathak, Abhinav Bindra and Rajyavardhan Rathore as our leading prospects, but here's another serious contender for a medal in Athens.

mugu has mentioned in another thread how India's ace shooter Anjali Bhagwat is practising without a coach, and slowly but surely these handicaps tend to bring the sports stars down.

Read the report Indian shooters disappoint in Milan World Cup.

Whose fault is it?

We have to hope that it is just one of those slumps and might not be carried forward to the Olympics.
Could it be just the lack of coach? Doubt it, though it could be one of the reasons. For, Suma Shirur, on her own initiative (and funds), has been training under Lazlo Suczak in Hungary. (Suczak was the Indian coach earlier, but somehow SAI/NRAI lost him.)
The slump, in the final run-up to the Olympics, will surely raise a question mark about our shooters winning medal (s) in Olympics. We have to keep our fingers crossed.

Some important points made in this interview with an experienced shooting coach:
http://www.hindu.com/2004/06/23/stories ... 031800.htm

Sponsorship and systematic individualised coaching is the way to ensure that India's undoubted potential in shooting translates into medals.

At least our marksmen are very much on track with their Olympic preparations (despite the dearth of coaching, practice bullets, etc.). Rajyavardhan Rathore has now won the double trap gold -- following the trap gold won by Mansher Singh -- at the Asian Clay Shooting Championship in Bangkok. Here's the rediff report:
