Actually the US case numbers are not very high. Compared to over 800K cases per day at the peak near New Years time, it only got up to around 125K a couple of weeks ago in the small current wave, which seems to be on the downswing for a couple of weeks now and down to around 100K in the current week's peak. So I don't think there is anything to worry. But then again, nothing is too predictable. Overall numbers are well down in most countries due to all the vaccinations, and so the chances for mutations are also probably that much lower. Keep your fingers crossed, but I think there is nothing too much to be concerned about right now.

The numbers from the state on Saturday, May 28th were: ANI 1, AP 12, ARP 0, ASM 0, CHD 17, CHG 10, DNHDD 0, DEL 442, Goa 12, GUJ 37, HAR 227, HP 10, J&K 7, JH 1, KAR 196, KER 879, LDK 1, LKS 0, MP 42, MAH 529, MNP 0, MEG 2, MIZ 14, NAG 0, ODI 12, PUD 2, PUN 23, RAJ 64, SKM 0, TN 56, TEL 43, TPR 0, UK 5, UP 134, WB 38

That sums up to a +2,820 which raises out 7-day average up by +85 to 2,381... There was only 1 death (in Jharkhand) and KER tacked on 13 old ones to it.

That is the highest rise of our average in 27 days, since the Delhi area wave started coming down. The southwest coastal states' total has now reached +1604 with Kerala probably going to 1000+ again next week.

The case counts for Sunday, May 29th were: ANI 1, AP 4, ARP 0, ASM 1, BIH 9, CHD 15, CHG 3, DNHDD 0, DEL 357, Goa 18, GUJ 28, HAR 154, HP 3, J&K 8, JH 0, KAR 241, KER 846, LDK 0, LKS 0, MP 44, MAH 550, MNP 0, MEG 0, MIZ 22, NAG 0, ODI 9, PUD 5, PUN 19, RAJ 73, SKM 0, TN 77, TEL 43, TPR 0, UK 7, UP 146, WB 38

That amounts to +2,721 for India, raising the weekly average of daily cases by +99 to 2,480... The slope of the wave is increasing slowly... There were 2 deaths (one each in MAH and WB) and then KER added 23 more old ones.

Looks like TN has started to inch up? As expected...

TN numbers are up again. Apparently there have been some 74 cases found in an ongoing cluster at the Vellore Institute of Technology in Kelambakkam in the last 3-4 days. College opens, students come from other states and clusters start - that is the pattern for many such clusters. They are hoping to contain it like they did with the IITM cluster a few weeks ago, basically testing all the students.

The case numbers for Tuesday, May 31st were: ANI 0, AP 10, ARP 1, ASM 0, BIH 5, CHD 23, CHG 12, DNHDD 0, DEL 373, Goa 29, GUJ 45, HAR 161, HP 6, J&K 1, JH 6, KAR 197, KER 726, LDK 3, LKS 0, MP 20, MAH 711, MNP 2, MEG 0, MIZ 19, NAG 0, ODI 3, PUD 5, PUN 13, RAJ 57, SKM 0, TN 98, TEL 59, TPR 0, UK 16, UP 95, WB 49

Pretty big spike in Maharashtra today. Trouble?

Houston, we have a problem (I think)!

The case totals for Wednesday, June 1st were: ANI 0, AP 11, ARP 0, ASM 0, BIH 9, CHD 22, CHG 15, DNHDD 0, DEL 368, Goa 42, GUJ 40, HAR 187, HP 7, J&K 6, JH 6, KAR 178, KER 1197, LDK 0, LKS 0, MP 35, MAH 1081, MNP 2, MEG 0, MIZ 16, NAG 0, ODI 14, PUD 11, PUN 14, RAJ 66, SKM 0, TN 139, TEL 75, TPR 0, UK 8, UP 124, WB 39

That is not pretty, and the numbers add up to +3,715, which raises our average by a +155 to 2,818... There were zero deaths and Kerala added 5 earlier deaths, but those low numbers will not last for too long.

Both Kerala and Maharashtra went over 1000, with the MAH rise being particularly steep... Watch out!!

The state-wise numbers for Thursday, June 2nd were: ANI 1, AP 14, ARP 2, ASM 3, BIH 6, CHD 20, CHG 8, DNHDD 0, DEL 373, Goa 47, GUJ 50, HAR 188, HP 13, J&K 7, JH 11, KAR 297, KER 1370, LDK 1, LKS 0, MP 25, MAH 1045, MNP 1, MEG 0, MIZ 16, NAG 0, ODI 11, PUD 4, PUN 21, RAJ 60, SKM 0, TN 145, TEL 67, TPR 0, UK 17, UP 157, WB 57

That is a total of +4,037, which takes our weekly average of daily case additions up +191 to 3,009... There were 4 deaths (2 in Delhi and one each in MAH and NAG) and Kerala added 6 earlier deaths to it.

The wave is rising at an increasing rate now. How high will it go?

The question, govt going to respond with lockdown! Already Maharashtra is threatening to impose restrictions!
Which will be stupid.

But then there is nothing we can do. We have vaccines. If u look at US number case numbers went from 30k to 100k in past 2 months, but the fatality rate pretty much stayed the same or even dropped. This probably indicates that people who are previously exposed or boosted are getting sick and coming thru fine.

^^^ Yes, Kumar. That is pretty much the situation in the U.S. Lots of people who got it before are getting it again, and coming through just fine. So many of my students have had it multiple times. A couple of them told me that they got it three times. It has just become a nuisance rather than a real issue. Hospitalization numbers have hardly risen when the US daily case numbers went up from 30K to 100K. The pattern is somewhat similar in India too, so far. The vaccination process needs to keep going though.

Also need to watch for new mutants, but none of real concern has come up since Omicron so far, in about 7 months or so... The Kerala health minister Veena George said yesterday that only Omicron has been found so far during this current wave in Kerala; no new strains. That is good news.

The numbers for Friday, June 3rd were: ANI 0, AP 9, ARP 0, ASM 0, BIH 15, CHD 19, CHG 11, DNHDD 0, DEL 345, Goa 50, GUJ 46, HAR 226, HP 21, J&K 9, JH 6, KAR 259, KER 1278, LDK 2, LKS 0, MP 43, MAH 1134, MNP 0, MEG 0, MIZ 20, NAG 0, ODI 8, PUD 11, PUN 11, RAJ 32, SKM 0, TN 113, TEL 49, TPR 0, UK 12, UP 192, WB 42

That brought up a sum of +3,963 for India, raising the average by a +180 to 3,190... There were 4 deaths (2 in MAH and 1 in Punjab) and Kerala added 20 old cases.

Interesting that govt approved covaxin and corbevax for kids 5-12,but there is no sustained driv or it is not clear if govt has approved.

https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-ne ... 19430.html
In April, this year, the national drugs regulator also granted emergency use authorisation to Corbevax for use in children aged 5-12 years, along with Covaxin for children aged 6-12.
Even if there is a new mutant, is there anything we can really do? The govt may put some travel restrictions, but there is not a whole lot that we can do

How do you think this pandemic will change some people behavior? Are more people going to be wearing madks in public places. Not really a bad idea for elderly especially in poorly ventilated indoor spaces or during flu season?

Why does Kerala have so many cases in the first place? It can’t just be better testing. Is it too many gulf travelers going back and forth? Then, why don’t the gulf countries have a high TPR? Or, do they also?
