Visionary pianist Iyer gets a well-earned MacArthur

I love it when I see an Indian (name) do well in something considered unconventional for us. Spelling bees, Miss whatever etc. don't interest me. Simlarly, I am thrilled when I see one of my students go and work for Teach for India instead of collecting big bucks from some investment bank or Facebook or google.

10 things India does better than anywhere else
2. Enterprising street vendors
India's street vendors sell the usual wares, from fake DVDs to earrings to bags of masala popcorn and roasted peanuts.

But there's also ear-cleaning, street dentistry and pavement astrology.

Vendors possessing the presence of mind to seize any opportunity -- last year when Starbucks opened in Mumbai, the queues were so long, a tea-vendor set up shop outside and sold his wares to waiting customers.

I suppose this is the right thread for it; and it is not anything to shout about but Microsoft's new CEO (and only the 3rd in its history) is Indian-born. Slowly but surely, we are taking over corporate America.

I am not familiar with Delhi at all, I had been there only once for a brief 2 day visit. This article, however, touched my heart with the style of narrative (you could tell that I am very old fashioned :p). I loved the way the journalist presented by weaving it into a chronicle.

Thought some of you might like it!

I am actually posting this on a friend's behalf but this info could be useful for me too in a few years. My friend who lives here in the US wants his son (in 9th grade) to take the IIT-JEE exam. He was looking for information on online/corresponding courses. Does anyone have any recommendations? Back when I was studying in India (late 80s early 90s), I did a correspondence course through Agrawal tutorials (based in Mumbai I think). The material was excellent. It's a different story that I didn't make it in the entrance. I did a google search and they don't seem to exist anymore.

I know the format of th IIT-JEE exam changed and my friend's son may not be eligible to take the exam. But am not really sure about the new rules.

Please PM me instead of spamming this thread. I am not sure if it's ok to post such things here. Mods, feel free to delete this post if it violates the forum policy.

IIT as a brand has long been killed by our vote hungry politicians - better off sending him to a school in the US

I don't think he wants to go to school in India. He just wants to prepare for the exam and take it, if permitted.
