Squash in India

Post by BSharma »

The Indian squash is looking up and moving forward in leaps and bounds.

The SquashPlayer website has an editorial by Robert Edwards, PSA Technical Director and the 'Voice of Squash', and while reflecting on 2003 he mentioned that his wish for 2004 is "to return to India for a big one"..

The organisers of Chennai Open and the administrators of Indian squash must have spun some magic to get rave reviews! Congratulations.

TN win 3 of 4 titles at Jr Nationals

Post by warpspeed »

Host Tamil Nadu bagged three of the four titles at stake in the inter-State junior squash championship, which concluded at the ICL-TNSRA Academy courts here on Friday. Tamil Nadu, apart from retaining the girls' under-19 and under-15 titles, annexed the girls' under-15 crown too. Delhi `A' bagged the boys' under-15 title, defeating Tamil Nadu `A' in the final.

So overwhelming was Tamil Nadu's performance that it lost just two games in the under-19 finals. TN `A' girls blanked Maharashtra `A' 3-0. And TN boys posted a convincing 2-0 victory over Maharashtra `A'.

Ranked No. 1 in the country, Dipika Pallikal gave TN a head-start by winning the opener at the Centre Court for the loss of one game to Shivangi Paranjpe in the girls' under-19 section. Anwesha Reddy put it across Shivangi's sister Madhura in straight games while Shibani Philip didn't exert herself too much against Shaheen Madraswala in the dead rubber.

In the final league match to decide the winner of the girls' under-15, TN `A' with Dipika in the lead, scripted a 3-0 win over Maharashtra `A'. The individual events begin on Saturday.

The results:

Boys U-19 (final): TN `A' bt Mah `A' 2-0 (A. Parthiban bt Manek Mathur 9-4, 9-2, 9-2; Harinderpal Singh bt Sandeep Jangra 9-6, 9-3, 5-9, 9-4); Third place play-off: TN `B' bt Delhi `A' 2-1 (9-5, 9-7, 4-9, 9-6; Vinayak Shetty bt Uday Das 9-2, 9-3, 9-1; Ashwin Sridhar gave a w/o to Raghav Malik).

U-15 (final): Delhi `A' bt TN 3-0 (Karam Kumar bt Akshay Deepak 9-4, 8-10, 7-9, 10-8, 9-4; Ravi Dixit bt Karan Malik 3-9, 9-6, 9-6, 9-5; Sumer Bahl bt Yaksh Dawar 9-3, 9-1); Third place play-off: Mah `A' bt Raj `A' 2-1 (Mahesh Mangaonkar lost to Karan Kanodia 2-9, 5-9, 9-0, 9-2, 6-9; Rahul D'Cunha bt Rishi Jalan 9-6, 0-9, 9-4, 9-3; Aditya Gupta bt Vipul Saran 9-1, 9-2, 9-0).

Girls u-19 (final): TN `A' bt Mah `A' 3-0 (Dipika Pallikal bt Shivangi Paranjpe 9-2, 9-2, 6-9, 9-3; Anwesha Reddy bt Madhura Paranjpe 9-1, 9-3, 9-5; Shibani Philip bt Shaheen Madraswala 9-3, 9-0); Third place play-off: TN `B' w/o UP.

U-15 (final league match): TN `A' bt Mah `A' 3-0 (Dipika Pallikal bt Saheen Madraswala 9-1, 9-0, 9-0; Anwesha Reddy bt Sachika Balwani 9-0, 9-2, 9-0; Harita Ompralash bt Ankita Sharma 9-1, 9-3, 9-0). TN `B' finished second.
