QATAR AIRWAYS CHALLENGE 2006:

None of the Indian women were given a wild card to the main tournament, but four of them will figure in the qualifying draw. The qualifying tournament will be played on July 4th and I hope that some forum members get a chance to see some of the world's best squash players in action.

Draw: Location - Secunderabad Club
Joshna Chinappa vs Louise Crome (NZL) #8 seed
Anwesha Reddy vs Runa Reta (Canada) # 3 seed
Dipika Pallikal vs Tricia Chuah (Malaysia) #5 seed
Surbhi Misra vs Carla Khan (Pak) # 1 seed

There are 16 players in the field and eight will qualify into the main draw. Pallikal and Misra are in the same quarter of the draw.

The Deccan Chronicle has a nice report about the match involving 15-year old Indian junior player Dipika Pallikal and WISPA ranked # 35 Malaysian Tricia Chuah. I believe that the link to Deccan Chronicle does not last for too long (correct me if I am wrong), hence read it soon.

The report stated that Dipika won the first set when she played better than her opponent in the back court and caught the Malaysian on the wrong foot. The two players traded the next two sets, but then the more experienced Tricia Chuah pulled out all stops and easily took the 4th and 5th sets with her well-disguised drop shots and excellent cross-court shots. Dipika attributed part of her loss to Tricia's superior fitness.

Good show from Joshna. I think the Indian Squash Association or whatever it is called and not the organisers of the even should take the responsibility for denying Joshna the wild card. However, I think Joshna doesn't need their help either.

The Qatar Airways Challenge was held in Doha in the past two years and was moved to Hyderabad this year. The tournament has the third biggest prize money ($79,550) on the WISPA calender and most of the top players participate in it. The world number one ranked player, Vanessa Atkinson of The Netherlands, has withdrawn because of an unstable disk in her back. The tournament will take place in the new all-glass court (featuring a glass floor for the first time ever at a major event) erected in front of the Falaknuma Palace.

The main draw:

Wild card denial angers Joshna

http://www.ndtv.com/sports/showsports.a ... a&id=29104
Joshna was not given a wild card to enter the main draw of the 79,500- dollar event and had to play a qualifying match.

"I am the number one player in the country, I should have been given a wild card. We don't host tournaments like this every day for them to say they will give it to me next time," she said.
Clearly, the Squash Federation of India is shooting itself in the foot by not supporting their best prospect to make it big in the international circuit.
