Re: Rajeev Ram thread...
He's at a career high 11 th in doubles this week.
A career high 56th in singles, 11th in doubles and an Olympics medal in the kitty... not bad for someone who quintessentially been a "home"-grown talent, dispels the prevailing notion that one needs to relocate to the academies of Florida / Southern California or Europe to have a decent career in tennis.

Re: Rajeev Ram thread...
Even if he's an NRI, he's afflicted with the common trend of Indians - "good tennis doubles player".

Re: Rajeev Ram thread...
Rajeev Ram is partnering Feliciano Lopez at the Qatar Open this week. If this is a long-term partnership, I can see this pair winning a Slam, perhaps as early as the AO this year. Rajeev of course has now retired from singles, so he is getting serious about winning the big doubles titles presumably.
Re: Rajeev Ram thread...
This would be a great partnership if Ram clicks. Ram needs to seize on this great opportunity and push hard to get a slam title out of it.PKBasu wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2018 4:10 pm Rajeev Ram is partnering Feliciano Lopez at the Qatar Open this week. Re: Rajeev Ram thread...
Instead, he is partnering Divij Sharan at the AO this year, so we have an all-Indian partnership (albeit not an all-India partnership).

Re: Rajeev Ram thread...
Partnering Ivan Dodig, Rajeev beat the top seeded Kubot/Melo to make the SF in Rotterdam.

Re: Rajeev Ram thread...
Rajeev Ram became the world no. 1 in doubles this week at 38. He is the oldest one to become world no.1 for first time.

Pretty amazing achievement! Also confirmation that you can be very good (and infact reach a career high) in your late 30s in doubles.

Re: Rajeev Ram thread...
So three guys with Indian names (well, one with a Portuguese last name!) have reached that #1 ranking in doubles. Now I want to see a Japanese name (Yuki) get there

Re: Rajeev Ram thread...
Yuki will need a perfect partner to get there! He isn't your typical serve-and-volleyer who are among the top doubles players (although he is very good at the net). What he brings to the game is top 10 or even top 5 (doubles) quality returns and ground strokes, so he needs a partner that can both be decent from the back court (in order to maximize their advantage in the return games) and also be sharp at the net (to help defend Yuki's weak serve).
Perhaps, someone like Ramk could be a good partner as he is both good at the net and also has a top 200-300 quality forehand which he can leverage by playing the deuce court in doubles. However, not sure whether the two have good chemistry which is also an essential ingredient for a successful doubles team.

Does anyone know the story behind this? I always wondered how/why his parents chose this name. It means happiness or snow in Japanese depending upon which characters you write it in.

Re: Rajeev Ram thread...
I think for Yuki to get anywhere close to Top-10, as mentioned earlier by Arjun he needs a good partner. And that partner should be able to spur him up and keep him going during his mental conundrums during the match where he loses confidence suddenly that effects his game adversely.... A mental conditioning coach would be a great inclusion into his team, if he can afford it. But I guess he should get close to Top-60 or Top-50 and consistently be able to play in ATP level tournaments and Grandslams before he can afford it.....

Re: Rajeev Ram thread...
If you haven't seen the news, there has been serious controversy about Rajeev Ram not being selected for the Davis Cup, and then USA lost the doubles match and the tie to Italy, with what most people consider the "frat boy" team that didn't want the "old guy" with them. They didn't even take Ram as the 5th player they could've taken. Imagine being #1 this year (currently #3) in the world and the winner of US Open and the year-end doubles championship, and not being selected for the country's team. I want to know what the useless guy Mardy Fish was smoking.
Anyway, a few minutes after USA lost the doubles match, Rajeev got his final laugh with a tweet.
Ataboy, Rajeev! Haha This has sort of become "the tweet of the year" in US tennis. Read all the responses to the tweet. People are unanimously with him on this. Lots of articles in the last couple of days on the whole controversy.
This is what Rajeev gets for dropping India's invitation way back when he was 17 years old and in India to play the circuit. He didn't want to turn his back on USTA who had supported him in the juniors. He could have actually been a bigger name in tennis and made a lot of money as a celebrity too, had he played under India colors (in my opinion).
