Vaidehi Chaudhari thread

Post by PKBasu »

Vaidehi has had a breakout year in 2022, and has surely earned her own thread. She has beaten India #1 Ankita Raina (R1 W25 Gurugram), the rising Indonesian Priska Nugroho (the following week's W25 Gurugram, R1 again),and then-India#3 Zeel Desai (W15 Gurugram SF Feb'22). Plus she has made two W15 finals (the one in Gurugram in Feb'22, and another in Monastir, Tunisia, in July), and another W15 SF (Jhajjar, Feb). This week's run to the QF in Navi Mumbai is the third W25 singles QF of the year for her -- and, best of all, she has beaten Ekaterina Yashina (who beat her in the Gurugram W25 QF and Almaty W25 R1 earlier in the year) at Navi Mumbai in straight sets. A player who learns from past losses to a veteran of the Futures circuit, and comes back to beat her has earned her spurs here, in my opinion :-)

Good job by Vaidehi to make another W15 final, beating the Polish player Veronika Baczak in the SF.

As always, PKB jumped the gun and started a thread before the criterion was met, but congrats on his optimism coming true within just a week! (I also felt that a thread for her was nearly in order and kept quiet :) )

Vaidehi won a double crown at the Gwalior M15 and justified the trust PKB had on her!!

Go Vaidehi!!

I came to here to write the same thing about PKB jumping the gun. :-) Congratulations Vaidehi.

Congratulations to Vaidehi for winning her second ITF title in Gurugram this week. With final, SF and winner in 3 weeks she earns 20 points from 3 weeks. After discounting the 6 points which she is defending from last year, she will move up to around 510 in the rankings as on 6th March 2023. No points to defend now till June. So, she can move in next couple of months if she earns some good points.

And today in Bangalore, she beat the 4th seed, Jakupovic (SLO, 243; CH 69), a very nice scalp! (As the name indicates, Jakupovic is Bosnian: Jakup or Yakub being the stem of her surname).

At Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand:

[QF] 4-Vaidehi Chaudhuri (IND, 491) d. 6-Lu Jialing (CHN, 536; CH 162) 60 64

A bagel delivered to a Chinese player is always extra sweet! Vaidehi now at a new career high of 432.

Vaidehi (partnering Shrivalli Bhamidapaty) is in the doubles SF there as well.

Vaidehi is playing W25 in Astana, Kazakhstan and since she is the only one thru to second round, will rather discuss in her thread for this week.

Other Indians Shrivalli took a set off 6th seed but lost in 3 sets while lucky loser Pratyusha Rachapudi lost in straight set.

[R1] (8) Vaidehi Chaudhari (IND,515) d. (WC) Sonjan Zhiyenbayeva (GER,1379) 64 61

17 year Sonjan is current 31st ranked junior. So, this is a good win for Vaidehi particularly the scoreline.

Next,

[R2] (8) Vaidehi Chaudhari (IND,515) vs. Polina Leykina (RUS,732)

Leykina is a former top 200 player but that was 7 years back at 21.

Leykina will not be an easy match.

When I started the thread for Astana challenger, I had suggested that we continue discussing both men’s and women’s ITF results there since I was sure that thread will not be overflowing with numerous results. Shrivalli and Vai won their doubles first round, so did Saumya Vig. So that’s 3 players who are still alive in the doubles part of the tournament.

Vaidehi lost in 3 sets. :-(

[R2] (8) Vaidehi Chaudhari (IND,515) l. Polina Leykina (RUS,732) 75 36 36

Vaidehi and Shrivalli are in doubles SF.

Vaidehi and Shrivalli lost in the W25 Astana finals to the top seeds Arakawa/Sema 7-6 3-6 5-10. I believe this is the best doubles result Shrivalli has reached in her career so far. They both are in top-450 with this result.
