Shruti Ahlawat thread

Post by PKBasu »

At the age of 15, Shruti Ahlawat made the singles final of the Asian Junior championships this week, winning the first set against in-form Sara Saito of Japan (winner of the G3 title in Pune last week) before falling away. She has won a couple of Grade 4 junior titles recently in New Delhi (end-November 2021) and Chennai (end-August), won a J5 singles title in Bhilai in March, and J4 titles in Gurugram and New Delhi (where she had to qualify in) in January 2021. Clearly, the star junior girl in India this year, with 5 singles titles to her name, and a runner-up finish in the Asian Junior (under-18) championship at the end of the year. Given her promising performances at age 15, Shruti Ahlawat has clearly earned herself a thread of her own here.

15 year old Shruti Ahlawat is now ranked 79 among juniors. She didn't play the J3 in Chandigarh this week. I hope that means she is trying to arrange to go play the Australian Open qualifying rounds. Difficult visa-wise, as we know...

^^^ The entry lists for the next two J2 tournaments in Delhi and Kolkata respectively show Shruti as the top seed entrant. In order to have gone to Australia, a fifteen year-old would have had to get vaccinated in the month of December and completed 2 doses but considering India opened up their vaccines to teenagers only recently, that is impossible. Same reason why 17yo Aman Dahiya couldn’t participate, despite making it to the acceptance list.

Shruti started her stint in Europe couple of weeks back with a JA tournament in Offenbach, Germany. Won her first round against against 133rd Ukranian 61 63 before losing out to 19th ranked Belgian 06 36 and the Belgian went on to reach SF.

This week Shruti has beaten 92nd ranked American Ava Krug 62 63 in first round in J1 in Italy. In second round, Shruti will meet top seed and 17th ranked Swiss Celine Naef. At least Shruti is getting some real good wins on European clay.

Quite a while since we have had juniors who can beat top-100 quality juniors. Nice!

Shruti lost 26 26 against top seed 17th ranked Naef in Italy grade 1. She did reach doubles SF and again lost to top seeds 9-11 in third set there. Overall a pretty good performance.

Shruti has slipped to #92 among juniors from her high of #69 on 24th January this year. Still impressive for a 15 year old, but she will probably have to play the qualifiers at the French Open juniors.

With her Asia Oceania junior championships title, Shruti is now ranked among top 50 in the ITF junior rankings being ranked 49 this week. Among girls of course there are lot more younger players doing well on the junior tour. There are 7 players born in 2006 like Shruti is but are ranked higher than her and there are 4 players born in 2007 too who are ranked higher than her. Still, it is great that we have someone ranked in top 50 in ITF juniors after a long time. She still has 270 singles points and 75 doubles points to defend for rest of the year. So, I guess she may have to win some 60-80 points to confirm her place in main draw of Australian open juniors. I think she is guranteed to appear in AO junior qualies as of now. But, every chance that she too will get into AO main draw.
