Riya loses 6-2 6-1 (picks up $1,000 for this effort). Her game has subdued. Who’s her coach? She should rather focus on honing her skills and start winning at the ITF level this year.

Disappointing score line against a player with a similar ranking.

That is a very meaningful win, even if Akgul is now ranked a bit lower than Riya. She has tormented our players for a long time, standing at 6 feet 3 inches tall. A former top-50 player, she won the silver in singles at the 2010 Asian Games.

So impressed with Riya! She absolutely steamrolled Laura Siegemund 6-2 in the first set :bounce:

Siegemund could deal with neither her serves nor her returns. So many winners off her racquet! It's great to see her play such positive tennis and I hope she continues this in the next set of her WTA main draw debut!

Edit: She just came up with a gutsy hold and has now broken Siegemund to lead 6-2, *2-1

Just lost a close second set in a tiebreak 6-7(2)
She led by a break twice but immediately got broken both times, while holding all her other service games.
In the TB, she was probably nervous, spraying double-faults to go down 0-5 and then it was too late to recover.

Hope she puts it behind her and plays a good 3rd set.

Final update: Siegemund wins 2-6 7-6(2) 6-1

Riya should draw a lot of confidence from this performance. The way she dominated Siegemund in the first set was especially impressive. The key was to hit deep. In the second set, her balls started landing in the middle of the court, allowing Siegemund to seize the initiative.

Yes, Riya should gain confidence from this result. Siegemund is a very consistent player who does not concede easy points, so glad to hear that Riya was able to hit through her at least in most of the first 2 sets. Now, we need to see consistency from her going forward....

Yes, that is an excellent performance by Riya. To take a 6-2 set against world #55 is indeed noteworthy. I did not even know that she is playing here. She was lucky to get in a a luck loser after losing in the only qualifying round. But, almost made the most of it.

So, as Jay said nobody is able to string together even 2 wins on a trot.
