Zeel can call herself unlucky, as the match was moved to indoor clay courts, from outdoor hard courts, due to continuous rainfall. This would have given an obvious advantage to the Portuguese girl.

Zeel Desai lists Paradorn Srichapan as her coach on her bio at the ITF site. Does anyone know more about this?

She has been playing a lot of tournaments in Thailand in last couple of months. So, probably she has shifted her training base with an acadamy with Paradon as head. Just assuming.

It feels like yesterday when Mr. 65 was a young sensation in Asia.... Does anybody remember that we used to call him that?

Nice to see Zeel live up to her seeding in South Africa. Surely a good opportunity to advance to the final too!

It's been a while since this thread got bumped.

In general, this generation of Indian girls makes me sad. We all had such high hopes from Mahak, MIhika, Zeel, Pranjala but none of them have progressed. Even KKT is out injured.

[SF] 3-Zeel DESAI (IND,800) vs. 2-Merel HOEDT (NED,799) 26 41 retd

Zeel has just broken to go 3-1 up in the second set, after losing the first.
These two are partnering each other in the doubles, where they are seeded second and will be playing the final against the top seeds later today.
Soon after I wrote the above, Zeel comfortably held to go 4-1 up, but asked for a medical time-out. And then she conceded :-(

All these girls have been hit either by injuries or bad planning as in case of Mahak. But, it is sad. We were looking 1-2 of these girls to graduate to top 100 level. It can still happen but time is flying fast for them to achieve this.

Zeel is playing in Tunisia this week and she has progressed to the QF stage in singles. It's a weaker draw since she had a BYE in Round 1.

At W15 MONASTIR, Tunisia

R1 [8] Zeel DESAI (745) vs BYE
R2 [8] Zeel DESAI (745) 6-0 6-2 Olympe LANCELOT (FRA,985)
QF [8] Zeel DESAI (745) vs Martyna KUBKA (POL,881)
