Snehadevi Reddy thread

18 year old Snehadevi Reddy won her first ITF title when she won the $10K title at Hyderabad last week. This comes a week after she reached a final in a competitive $15K tournament in Spain on clay. With 21 points from these 2 weeks, her points will go upto 47 and she will go upto around 530 in next week's WTA singles rankings. With this she will leapfrog to India no.2 behind Ankita Raina (from outside India top 10 only a couple of weeks before).

This shows how close it is between no. 2 and no. 10 behind Ankita. Snehadevi along with Dhruti Venugopal are only teenagers among top 10 and will now be no.2 and 4. Hope they make greater progress over the next 1 year.

Snehadevi had shown great promise in juniors when she won the Asian juniors title in 2013 but after that did not play much juniors ( although she did get to play Australian open juniors once). But, she is now training in Spain and the results of that are beginning to show in pros.

I watched her play against Prerna in the SF at Hyederabad and she has pretty good ground strokes. She is quite diminutive though and as a result has a weak serve. It will be challenge for her to put behind that physical handicap and keep moving up in WTA. There are a examples though from which Snehadevi can take heart from.

Creditable to be ranked #530 or so at the age of 18+ (she turned 18 on February 13th this year). The weak serve is a challenge, but not insurmountable.

Of course, Pranjala and Karman from the next age cohort will give her strong competition, but Snehadevi has shown good potential too. She reached a junior ranking of 59 early last year (when not quite 17) before switching to the pro tournaments permanently. The difference between those two and Snehadevi is that the latter hardly ever played a junior tournament outside Asia (and actually predominantly in India).

Yes, she only played in Australian open juniors in 2014 but gave up on junior after that almost 2 full years before her eligibility ended. If she had continued she would have probably got to play in junior slams this year.

She did have a personal tragedy it seems immediately after winning that Asian juniors. I am reposting the article I has posted in 2013 in juniors thread which mentions about that-

Success at sixteen
But the year was also witness to her suffering a shattering personal loss when she lost her mother in May. This forced her to withdraw from all the succeeding tournaments, including The Championships at Wimbledon.

Emerging from the gloom

But three months on, she has battled admirably, riding on the highs, to emerge from the gloom, a stronger person and a better player.

It looks like the end of 4 weeks of disappointing tour for Snehadevi whose game seems to have somewhat stagnated at this level.
