Ah, good old Akgul. I thought she had retired. Gosh, I still remember her, as a 17 or 18 year old, coming to Mysore and Hyderabad in the early 2000s for $10K events and getting her very first win on the pro tour. She qualified into both the events. Went a few rounds at Mysore and then lost the final against Sania at Hyderbad. I vaguely remember the Indian newspapers interviewing her mother who said something like they didn't have money to go to any expensive place and so came to India for her first pro events (something like that; or maybe I am confusing her with Bondarenko's mother). Anyway, Akgul was in India for many events later and won titles too. I am sure Akgul has fond memories of India. It would be nice to add a bad memory of losing to an Indian today, though.

OFF-TOPIC

Thank you for that detail, Jay. I was just searching based on your note above and came across these posts on tennisforum.com from 2002 (http://www.tennisforum.com/16-challenge ... ite-5.html) . Damn - its been long. Where are Daniel / Dhruv these days - haven't come across their posts in a long time. Glad atleast you are back and active (even if its for the last week only! :) ).

That is a wonderful scalp for Karman, to beat the 2010 Asian Games silver medalist (she lost the final to Peng Shuai, now Sania's doubles partner; that year, Sania won the singles bronze). Akgul is an absolute legend of Central Asian tennis (and pretty close to a legend among Asia's women players), having reached a career-high of 50, and made R3 of singles at the US Open in 2011 and French Open in 2010. A seriously good player, who is still at it at 33.

Oh, okay. Just making sure. I hadn't looked into the details after they redid the prize money levels recently.
