That is a bad loss for Karman after a good run last week.

Karman needs to win these type of matches against experienced opponents for moving ahead in her career.

To update this thread, Karman won her first ITF title when she won the $25K title in Hongkong this week.

These are her results this week-

[R1] (2) Karman Kaur THANDI (IND,262) d. (WC) Ho Ching WU (HKG,1084) 64 62
[R2] (2) Karman Kaur THANDI (IND,261) d. YeXin MA (CHN,570) 64 61
[QF] (2) Karman Kaur THANDI (IND,261) d. (SE) Mai HONTAMA (JPN,758) 64 61
[SF] (2) Karman Kaur THANDI (IND,261) d. Zuzana ZLOCHOVA (SVK,593) 62 61
[F] (2) Karman Kaur THANDI (IND,261) d. (1) Jia-Jing LU (CHN,185) 61 62

Thoroughly dominant display by Karman this week not losing a set and breezing thru semi final and final. This title win will take her ranking close to #225. But, more importantly she will get a lot of confidence from this and just get a feeling that now on she will move upwards much faster.

This was a spectacular tournament for Karman, and she got better with each round. This is reminiscent of Sania's spurt at this level when she was 18 (going on 19) in August 2004. Karman just turned 20 last week, so she remains just over a year behind Sania in the arc of her performances. But very promising indeed, and it should be up and up for her from now on in the run-up to the US Open (and the rather redundant Asian Games before that).

Amazing that she had no double faults in the entire tournament! She really needs to sustain that level of focus.

Maybe she has already "put it ll together", like I was saying she would one of these days. If she keeps her DFs to be 1/4th or fewer than the aces, that itself will get her close to probably top-100. The serve coming together is one of the real keys.

So, Karman becomes the sixth Indian player and fourth Indian citizen ( after Nirupama,Sania and Ankita) to reach top 200 in the WTA rankings. She is ranked at #200 in the latest WTA singles rankings.

Karman reaches this landmark just after 20th birthday which was in June. So,she surely should have more upside than Ankita who could reach that milestone only this year when she was past 25.

Of course, Sania reached this milestone when she was just past her 18th birthday.

Still, we can probably hope to have our next top 100 WTA player in Karman somewhere in next 2 years.

Karman lost in Q1.

At $125K WTA 125, Chicago (USA)

[Q1] (8) Karman Kaur Thandi (IND,207) l. Quinn Gleason (USA,414) 67(7) 60 16

Strange scoreline. Winning the set 6-0 and then losing the third one tamely.

At the Guangzhou WTA, China

QR1 KANG Jiaqi (CHN,596) v. Karman Kaur THANDI (IND,209) H2H 1-3

Winnable match for KKT and might have to defeat Danka Kovinic (former top-50) to qualify for the main draw. Looks like Ankita is skipping this week where there are 3 Asian WTA tournaments.

Karman starts with an easy win.

At the Guangzhou WTA, China

[Q1] (9) Karman Kaur THANDI (IND,209) d. KANG Jiaqi (CHN,596) 62 62

Next,

[Q2] (9) Karman Kaur THANDI (IND,209) vs. (5) Danca Kovinic (MNE,189)

As Dinesh said Kovinic was ranked in top 50 in 2016. But, she is not playing at that level this year. Lost in first round of qualies in 3 of the 4 slams this year and in second round in the fourth one. Also she has not won 2 straight matches anywhere since back in April. So, Karman certainly has a fair chance if she plays well.

Karman lost the second set 5-7.

Very close match so far. Karman needs to improve her first serve % which is only at 49% as of now.
