In the third set,Karman served for the match at 5-2 and had a match point at 40-30 but could not finish the job. She is broken for 5-3.
But, she comes back and broke Kovinic after a long tame to take the set and the match. :D

At the Guangzhou WTA, China

[Q2] (9) Karman Kaur THANDI (IND,210) d. (5) Danca Kovinic (MNE,191) 63 57 63

Second WTA tournament where he will be playing in the main draw after Nanchang in July.

Karman needs to tighten her game towards the end of matches. She should not have given up a break late in the third set.

Potential R1 opponents for Karman:
Andrea Petkovic(85, GER), (WC)Svetlana Kuznetsova(110, RUS), (WC) XinYu Wang(349, CHN), (8) Saisai Zheng(70, CHN), Kateryna Kozlova(117, UKR), and (6) Viktoria Kuzmova(59, SVK).
So XinYu Wang would be the lowest ranked player that Karman can play in R1.

This is tougher tournament than Nanchang. There only 4 top 100 player made it to the MD. Last direct acceptance 269.

Here all seeds are top 100. Last direct acceptance 125.

Good she made it to the main draw. Assured of $2100. Already won 19 points for qualifying.

[R1] (Q) Karman Thandi(IND, 210) vs (WC) Svetlana Kuznetsova(RUS, 110)

Possibly the toughest possible R1 matchup for Karman. Is she ready for Kuz? We'll find out tomorrow.

She is old now. Now is the time. Karman should play her A game. Results won't matter.

Swetlana is 33 now but still reached Washington WTA final last month and also took a set off Venus Williams at US open. It will be too tough for Karman,I guess.

Yes, this is same level tournament as Nanchang but much tougher draw. A bit surprising considering that there are 2 more tournaments in Asia this week.

I think Sania had once beaten Kuznetsova. Anyhow playing against such an opponent would help Karman improve her game.

She did better than reaching the final. Svetlana won the Washington WTA beating Donna Vekic. I saw highlights of that match yesterday to see how she is playing. It is going to be a difficult ask for Karman to beat her.

Yes, a positive start for Karman ... She won the first set breaking Kuznetsova twice and lost her service game once in this set ... In the 9th game, while serving for the set she saved a break point and converted the 2nd set point.

At $250K Guangzhou Open 2018, China

[R1] (Q) Karman Kaur Thandi (IND,210) vs (WC) Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS,110) 63

Wow that’s huge for Karman. She still struggles with the serves now and then but what a great first set to win against Kuzy.

After Karman won the first set, I was desperately hoping that she'd prove me wrong. She gave back a break in the second set and then Kuz must have been all over her. It must have been a great learning experience for Karman -- she shouldn't feel bad as she did something similar to Vekic in the Washington final.

Karman lost the third set 2-6.
