Re: Prajnesh Gunneswaran thread
Prajnesh is back to playing on hard courts this week.
At Porto Challenger 80, Portugal (Hard)
[R1] (2) Prajnesh Gunneswaran (IND,148) vs. Mathias Bourgue (FRA,198)
Bourgue is the highest ranked player not being seeded and has reached a challenger final and made it to the final round of qualies at AO this year. So,he is in better form than Prajnesh at this time. Probably will have better UTR than Prajnesh if they consider more recent results.

Re: Prajnesh Gunneswaran thread
And Prajnesh starts with a very good win.
At Porto Challenger 80, Portugal (Hard)
[R1] (2) Prajnesh Gunneswaran (IND,148) d. Mathias Bourgue (FRA,198) 61 36 62
This is Prajnesh's first win since Orlando challenger in April. He went 0-5 in clay season and 0-2 in grass season. Good that he got back to winning ways as soon as he got back tio hard courts,
Next,
[R2] (2) Prajnesh Gunneswaran (IND,148) vs. Steven Diez (CAN,189)
Prajnesh has lost the only match he has played against Diez in 2019. Hope he avenges that loss.

Re: Prajnesh Gunneswaran thread
Good win for Prajnesh against a player who has beaten #107 Hanfmann and Tomic on hardcourts, and #102 Verdasco on clay this year. Let's hope this marks a new uptick in form on hardcourts for Prajnesh.

Re: Prajnesh Gunneswaran thread
This surely is a huge confidence boosting win for Prajnesh , and hopefully his injury woes are now left behind.

Re: Prajnesh Gunneswaran thread
He lost in a close match in second round.
At Porto Challenger 80, Portugal (Hard)
[R2] (2) Prajnesh Gunneswaran (IND,148) l. Steven Diez (CAN,189) 36 61 46
78 points to 80 and Praj lost despite serving 11 aces in the match. So, he still needs some improvement in ground game.

Re: Prajnesh Gunneswaran thread
Prajnesh is in the qualifying entry list at the Citi open ATP 500. I hope he gets to start with a less fancied opponent and gain some momentum to qualify for the MD. Draw should be out any soon.

Re: Prajnesh Gunneswaran thread
PG indeed got an easier first round opponent drawing doubles specialist Luke Saville, who just got back from Tokyo after losing in the opening round doubles with John Millman. Sixth seeded Prajnesh might face 8th seed Jason Jung, if the latter beats Go Soeda.

Re: Prajnesh Gunneswaran thread
Nice and easy win for Prajnesh in the ATP Washington (DC) Open:
[Q1] 6-Prajnesh Gunneswaran (IND, 155) d. Luke Saville (AUS, 422) 62 62
Saville is now a doubles specialist, although he played Hurkacz in singles at the Olympics and lost 2 and 4. The last singles match (above Futures level) he won was in Q1 of the 2020 Australian Open. Otherwise he won 1 and 2 rounds in two Futures last year, and has just played 3 ATP qualifying singles matches this year (losing all). Although he had a good junior singles record, Saville has reached a career-high singles rank of just 151, and even that Challenger singles career has been wound down in 2020 and 2021. So nothing to write home about this win for PG, but it's always good to have a scalp in the bag.

Re: Prajnesh Gunneswaran thread
[Q2] Prajnesh Gunneswaran (IND, 155) vs. Soeda Go (JPN, 178).
They have played each other 3 times, Soeda leads the head-to-head 2-1. (One win each in 2019; the other Soeda win was in Vietnam in 2016, arguably before Prajnesh really became a regular Challenger-level player).

Re: Prajnesh Gunneswaran thread
At the St Tropez Challenger, Prajnesh faces 242 ranked Hugo Grenier in R1, winnable match and in R2 will face winner of 2 qualifiers.
In fact the draw looks good and if he plays to his ranking, minimum a semis spot is there for the asking.
Very important for Prajnesh to do well here, as next week Cassis is one of the toughest challenger on the tour and will be hard to garner easy points.
Also at the same tournament, featuring for the dbls are the team of Purav & Jeevan.

Re: Prajnesh Gunneswaran thread
Lets use UTR/ELO or do a bit more data check (till November which is when we will start seeing our players creating upset wins on a weekly basis)
(R1) Prajnesh and Hugo are ranked the same as per UTR and Hugo has reached 2 semis in the last 4 challenger events he played. Hugo is French and is playing in his home territory. So an even match in the best of cases.
(R2) A qualifier - so both Hugo/Prajnesh should fancy their chances
(QF) They will possibly face Altug Celikbilek - he has won 2 Challengers in the last 3 events he played. An overwhelming fav against both Prajnesh and Hugo. Another possible candidate is Constant Lestienne - another player whom UTR puts at a much higher level compared to both Prajnesh and Hugo.
Apology for such a lengthy post but reaching semis will be a big accomplishment but instead we are taking it as a given and then when he loses say in QF, we end up with the possible thought that our mens players are down in the slump and not trying enough.
