He earned 65 points for the finals last week, so wouldn't that be enough to defend the 57 that would fall off in the next few weeks?

At Liuzhou, Prajnesh will potentially meet Fabbiano in the QF provided he beats Safwat in R2 and Fabbiano wins as well. It appears that it is going to be tough for Prajnesh to pick up a lot of points this week. But first things first, he's got to beat Safwat.

Those 65 points are already added while computing his current ranking of 146. So, 57 points to defend his top 150 ranking is what I would say.

This is another article on Prajnesh-

Prajnesh Gunneswaran eyes fresh targets
Prajnesh can easily be top-100. In the semifinal in Ningbo, he outplayed Momir Kecmanovic.

The Serbian’s coach was so impressed that he told me that if Prajnesh played in the same fashion he would be in the top-70 very soon,” said Balachandran.
Hope that comes true. Compared to earlier, he has improved his backhand and court coverage a great deal. Now, if only he can improve his finishing the points better as prof said above, that target of top 70 is possible.

Yes, he is now at a new career high of 142 in official ATP rankings.

41 more points to defend this year. He is about 140 points away from Australian open main draw cut off of around 105. If we add 41 points to defend, it gets around 180 points. That is too much to get with 3 tournaments left for the year.

Next best thing is try to get a seeding in the qualifying draw of Australian open for which he will need a ranking around 140. For this, he will need to get around 45-50 points in the 3 remaining tournaments which is very much possible.

Congratulations to Prajnesh for winning his second challenger title when won $150K(+H) Bangalore Challenger. These are his results this week-

[R1] (4) Prajnesh Gunneswaran (IND,141) d. Ivan Nedelko (RUS,264) 62 62
[R2] (4) Prajnesh Gunneswaran (IND,141) d. (Q) Sebastin Fanselow (GER,431) 46 64 75
[QF] (4) Prajnesh Gunneswaran (IND,141) d. (Q) Sasi Kumar Mukund (IND,418) walkover
[SF] (4) Prajnesh Gunneswaran (IND,144) d. Brayden Schnur (CAN,233) 64 61
[F] (4) Prajnesh Gunneswaran (IND,141) d. (WC) Saketh Myneni (IND,315) 62 62

So,except that second round match where he came back from being a match point down, it a dominant performance by Prajnesh,

With that he will be new India #1 in the ATP singles rankings on Monday.

As expected, Prajnesh at a new career high ranking of #110 this week and a new India #1. What a year it has been for him. Starting with a ranking of 243 and making such a big jump with the help of 2 big $150K challenger titles. He had 4 ATP main draw appearance too and his 2018 prize money is $154K which is about 60% of his total career prize money.

Hope he makes the main draw of all the slams next year.

Amazing how much difference playing a main draw if slams to the prize money.

Yuki with a lower ranking has a prize money of $349K this year mainly because he played main draw at all 4 slams and at IW and Miami.RamK has also earned a bit more than RamK at $192K of which $52K were are Newport.

After these 3 there is steep fall in the money winner. Sumit is fourth with a YTD earning of $44K.

I like Prajnesh's attitude - he understands the fitness demands of 5-setters and has a phenomenally mature approach. It will be so great for him and Indian tennis if he cracks the top 50!!

Don't think top 50 will happen but he can certainly spend 2-3 years inside the top 100.

If he gets a decent draw at Pune, I think Prajnesh will be in the Top-80 by the end of the Australian Open. His best chance of breaking into the top-50 will be between February and May (until the French Open), as he won’t be defending that many points and will be playing a lot of ATP tour events for the first time.

Prajnesh needs to be able to come to the net on a regular basis if he wants to crack the top 50. He plays way behind the baseline and is susceptible to drop shots which many players in the top 100 can pull off on a consistent basis.

True … he needs to modify his game for getting more net play in his armoury , as in Stuttgart against Guido Pella even though it was on grass it was virtually a clay court baseline slug feast.
And that's what is bit concerning for the DC , the Italians wouldn't mind one bit if he stays camped on the baseline and plays like Stuttgart, as it would be more to their(Italians) liking and would be giving away the surface advantage in both his matches.

He came to the net quite a lot against Denis Shapovalov in Stuttgart, on grass. So, where he feels comfortable, Prajnesh does come to the net.
