Nah, not too harsh. I agree that by Indian standards they are ok although we've had a surfeit of better tennis doubles rankings even in India. Therefore, even by that standard, asking for special recognition is hardly justified. Oh, the casual fans can easily rattle ten more singles name outside the top-10. I'm quite sure of that.

That may well be true, but Paes manages to be much more well known in the tennis fraternity than most doubles stars. In this country, it is due in large part to the mixed doubles partnerships with Navratilova.

I concur that most casual tennis fans I've encountered know none of the top doubles players except the Bryan brothers.

Played tennis today with a Brazilian (from Belo Horizonte) who not only knew of Leander Paes (and the qualities that made him such a good player, in singles and doubles) but also could point to all the Brazilians who had partnered Sania in Mixed Doubles. (Bruno Soares, Melo and Andres Sa are all from Belo Horizonte, which helps…I also cannot resist mentioning that I beat him 60 60, probably the best club player I have ever double bageled!).
