Good to see Pranjala in the QF of a Grade 1 event in China. I am a bit surprised that she (as #118) is seeded #1 in a Grade 1 event, though.

Some disappointing losses for Pranjala in the latest couple of weeks. She is still very young but clearly in need of close attention and coaching at this vital stage of her development.

After some time, Pranjala had a good run this week when she made her first final at Grade 2 level in Thailand before losing to a higher ranked Frenchman in the final. Still, this run would move Pranjala up close top 70 in the rankings .With some of the players dropping out of juniors at the end of the year, Pranjala has a very good chance now of making the main draw at Australian open juniors. Hopefully, she will have 1-2 more good tournaments before the end of the year and will further move up the rankings.

Pranjala has reached the singles final in the Thailand junior Grade 1 event.

These are her results this week.

At Chang Thailand ITF Junior G1

[R1] (2) Pranjala YADLAPALLI (IND,74) bye
[R2] (2) Pranjala YADLAPALLI (IND,74) d. Natalie KALLMUNZEROVA (CZE,278) 76(5) 60
[R3] (2) Pranjala YADLAPALLI (IND,74) d. (15) Jaimee FOURLIS (AUS,194) 63 62
[QF] (2) Pranjala YADLAPALLI (IND,74) d. Tamara ARNOLD (SUI,216) 63 63
[SF] (2) Pranjala YADLAPALLI (IND,74) d. (3) Olivia TJANDRAMULIA (AUS,76) 63 63

Next,

[F] (2) Pranjala YADLAPALLI (IND,74) vs. (4) Deria NUR HALIZA (INA,87)

17 year old Indonesian Nur Haliza upset top seed Naithika Bains in the SF in straight sets. So, she appears to be good form but so seems to be Pranjala from her scorelines and Pranjala beat the Indonesian in their last meeting in Thailand grade 2 in October. Pranjala and Deria were doubles partners and lost the doubles final in a close super tiebreaker.

Pranjala is in her first grade 1 final. Can she win her first title at this level ?

Whatever happens in the final, with her singles and doubles points here, Pranjala will move just inside top 50. A win will move her close to top 40.

And Pranjala won her first grade 1 title with another straight sets win.

At Chang Thailand ITF Junior G1

[F] (2) Pranjala YADLAPALLI (IND,74) d. (4) Deria NUR HALIZA (INA,87) 64 61

With that title, Pranjala will move close to top 40 in the ITF junior rankings and has almost certainly cemented her place in the main draw for all the remaining junior grand slams of the year.

Congratulations to Pranjala!! Winning a Grade 1 junior event at age 15 is outstanding! (She will only turn 16 three weeks from now).

Pranjala is now ranked 43 in the ITF junior rankings. She is the 4th highest ranked Asian now behind 2 Chinese and an Indonesian. She is also among top 10 in those born in 1999 or after.

Among Indian peers, she is the first one to come up so high in the ranking since Poojashree Ventetesha who had a career high in 2007 when she was 17+ .Before that Sanaa Bhambri was ranked 31 when she was 18+ and Isha Lakahni was ranked 26 when she was 17+.

Of course, the best among them was Sania Mirza who was ranked good enough to play grand slams before her 16th birthday although she reached her career high of 20 when she was 17+.

Pranjala is clearly a special talent at least in the league of those mentioned above or even better. She needs to be nurtured well and I am glad that GVK is taking care of her travel expenses as they did for Sania.

Next up for Pranjala is grade 1 junior in Malaysia next week where the field similar one as in Thailand.
