Re: Ankita Raina thread
Ankita and partner break You to go 4-1 up in the second set; after each pair held serve, our pair were broken to make it 5-3, but then safely served out the match:
[R1] Ankita Raina/Rosalie Van Der Hoek (IND/NED) d. Desirae Krawczyk/Xiaodi You (USA/CHN) 64 64

Ankita/Rosalie have taken the first set against last year's FO doubles champion:

Re: Ankita Raina thread
And Ankita has her first win over a reigning Slam doubles champion:
[QF] Ankita Raina/Rosalie Van Der Hoek (IND/NED) d. Saisai Zheng/Fang Yingxun (CHN/CHN) 76(5) 64
There was quite a lot of drama in the second set. Our pair were down a break at 3-4, then broke the opponents' serve twice and held their own serve to storm to the set and the match!
Ankita moves up to 124 in the doubles rankings, a career-high (and incidentally, one ahead of Astra Sharma, the half-Indian Australian who made the MxD final at the AO last year and SF this year).

Re: Ankita Raina thread
Wow, Ankita is showing some serious doubles ability! Based on her game, I didn't think she would be all that good in doubles but her results indicate otherwise...

Re: Ankita Raina thread
I haven't seen her play a lot but her net game is decent. However, she doesn't use it a lot in singles.

Not sure who retired. If it is Ankita, then, oh well.... Our players almost always get injured soon after they hit a career-high in something.

Re: Ankita Raina thread
I watched a few games. It was her partner who retired since she took a medical time out at the end of the first set. Ankita will be the top seed at next week's Jodhpur $25K ITF, the cut-off for which has dropped too low to 890 (if the special exempt spots are removed).

Re: Ankita Raina thread
Congratulations to Ankita for winning her seventh 25K title this week in Jodhpur and her second title this year.
These are details of her title run this week.
[R1] (1) Ankita Raina (IND,176) d. Bojana Marinkovic (SRB,809) 75 61
[R2] (1) Ankita Raina (IND,176) d. Sakura Hondo (JPN,562) 62 63
[QF] (1) Ankita Raina (IND,176) d. (6) Riya Bhatia (IND,349) 61 61
[SF] (1) Ankita Raina (IND,176) d. (4) Nudnida Luangnam (THA,347) 63 62
[F] (1) Ankita Raina (IND,176) d. (7) Berfu Cengiz (TUR,451) 75 61
Absolutely dominant performance. Admittedly she did not face anyone in top 300 and these level players do not challenge her much these days.
With 50 points from this week ( net of 6 points which are her 16th best points) will take her to a new career high just inside top 160 in rankings as on 2nd March.

Re: Ankita Raina thread
Ankita is at a career high rankings of 160 and 119 respectively in singles and doubles this week.
Her next big points to defend are in early April where she has 48 points to defend from 60K final in Turkey last year. Few points to defend in March/April in doubles but not much.
Hope she gets top top 150 in singles and top 100 in doubles in next 2-3 months.

Story on Ankita missing out on
Ankita Raina rues missing out on Palermo entry
Did not realise that the pro tennis has started this week with that WTA tournament in Palermo. Sad that Ankita had to delay her return to tennis.

Re: Ankita Raina thread
Arantxa Rus, who I saw Ankita thrash 63 62 in the Singapore ITF final last year, is playing Serena Williams in R2 at Cincinnati today. Rus is now ranked 72 (she was around 112 when they played that final).
In fact, halfway through this video (visible from the midway point until the end of the match), you might be able to spot me if you have an eagle eye:

Re: Ankita Raina thread
Not realising where you are PKB. Will see it again carefully later.
In the meantime, Ankita is slated to make her return to competitive tennis at WTA 125 in Prague which starts on 31st August, next Monday.

Re: Ankita Raina thread
Yes, Suresh, that's me. It is difficult to make out any faces, but I know my clothes (and I also remember where I was sitting!). I have a couple of nice photos posing with Ankita too (and I did a quick interview with her which I posted on this thread). I had posted the photos on FB almost immediately after the match, and I think Jaydeep helped to post one here, but it doesn't show up on the page for me now (just says "Image").
Good to know that Ankita is playing the WTA Prague event starting on 31 August. Pretty surprising that a WTA tournament is on during the same week as the US Open -- implying that the field will be quite winnowed down. There is another WTA tournament in Istanbul the following week: I hope Ankita is planning to play that one as well. (Prague is a $125K event, so basically a high-level Challenger, although not called that by the WTA).
