Ankita Raina thread

Post by PKBasu »

Ankita Raina (who turned 19 on 11th January this year) has made the final of a $10K Futures outside India this week, and I think this qualifies her for her own thread. We normally reserve threads for players who win Futures, but a final outside India is as good as winning a title in India, in my view, so here goes.

She was a promising junior, but didn't play enough outside India during her junior years. Consequently she only achieved a career-high junior ranking of 183 when she was 17.

You could have at least waited for the final result. She may win the title.

Congrtulations to 19 year old Ankita Raina for winning her first ITF singles title in Delhi today when she beat Prerna Bhambri in $10K final.

With that title she will gain 12 points & will move up close to 700 in the WTA rankings . When these points are updated ( only 2 weeks from now after Wimbledon) Ankita will move upto India no. 3 behind Sania & Kyra as Prerna loses points from her last year's title points .

With the Futures title this week, Ankita has fully earned the thread that I started a few months ago. Promising set of results from her this year: may she now go from strength to strength.

As mentioned by Ankita in the interview, she will be going Japan for a couple of $25K Challengers. Its usually a tough field there.Ankita is #19 in the Qualifying field of a 32-player draw.

Good luck for her to qualify :)

The Entry list is quite strong that even a regular challenger player like Emily Smith with a ranking of #407 could not make the main draw.

Expected tough outing for Ankita in singles .

QR1: Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (GBR) [4] 6-2 6-1 Ankita RAINA (IND)

But i reckon we will see her in doubles main draw as she has a decent doubles ranking of 476 to her name. Thanks to the 3 $10K titles she has won this year.
