Diatchenko proved too strong for Ankita.

At $60K ITF Women's Tournament 2019, Istanbul, Turkey

[F] (6) Ankita Raina (IND,203) l. (1) Vitali Diatchenko (RUS,95) 46 06

Still, a great week for Ankita, one of the best of her career. She will move up back inside top 200, around 180. Next up for her is WTA 125K in Anning in 2 weeks time. A relatively weak entry list there and with her new ranking, Ankita may get a seeding. It is on clay though.

Regardless of the outcome, Ankita will surely gain from playing against the 2010 French Open singles finalist and 2011 US Open champion. Given that Samantha is 35, a spry Ankita could be in line to pull off the biggest win of her career...Go ANKITA!

Ankita starts with an excellent upset win in the doubles.

At $125K WTA Anning (Clay)

[R1] Ankita Raina (IND) / Ashley Kratzer (USA) d. (4) Xinyyuiang (CHN) / Qianhui Tang (CHN)57 64 10-6

Will this spur Ankita on for an upset win in singles too against Sam Stosur !!

Stosur is coming here after a great Fed Cup weekend defeating Belarus in the SF at home (albeit losing both of her singles matches (1-2 to Sabalenka and 0-2 to Azarenka, despite winning the deciding doubles rubber partnering Barty). This will be a tough match but Ankita already has faced Sam in Dubai lost year (losing 6-4 6-4) and has since only been improving, but the change in surface might decide the match winner.

Interesting that Sam Stosur, one of the women's doubles greats, chooses not to play doubles in this event. The 8th seed in singles is ranked 156, so Ankita was one of the highest-ranked unseeded players -- and quite unlucky to draw 3rd seeded Stosur. But I think she can win this, as she is inspired and close to the best form of her life. Their match is not on the schedule for today, so Stosur must have obtained a late start on Wednesday.

Ankita couldn't sustain the momentum, losing the second set 2-6. Onto the final set now against Samantha Stosur!

What a massive win this is! Should provide a huge fillip to her career. And I'm glad I called it...

Ankita rises 5 spots to 175 in the live WTA rankings! Samantha Stosur too rises 2 slots to 75 (go figure)!

Sam is not an ordinary player and Ankita was able to keep up with her thorough out the match. Game 9 in set 3 was a tough hold for Sam and had 4 deuces before Sam could hold serve. This should give Ankita a massive boost in confidence. Go Ankita! woohoo
