He may also probably need to come and stay in India for a few days in India for getting some visa for subsequent tournaments. This problem was highlighted by Karman in an interview few months back where she said she has to disrupt her playing and training schedule to return to India every now and then for obtaining visas.

So, if that is the case here, at least Sumit has some tournaments to play while he is here.

That makes sense. I also forgot the fact that he wasn't picked for the Davis cup squad. Hopefully from next year he will be selected automatically based on ranking.

Sumit gets his revenge on clay courts with a dominating win.

At $25K Poland F10 Futures, Poznan

[R2] (2) Sumit Nagal (IND,264) d. Maciej Rajski (POL,541) 63 62

He plays another local player next,

[QF] (2) Sumit Nagal (IND,264) vs. (8) Hubert HURKACZ (POL,409)

Hubert seems to be a talented 20 year old who has won a lot of matches at challenger level too. So, this is a tougher match for Sumit.

[QF] (2) Sumit Nagal (IND,264) d. (8) Hubert HURKACZ (POL,409) 2-6, 6-3, 6-2

Sumit needs to win this to defend points from last year and next up is a #344 ranked German Mats Moraing who won the title last week and is in the top 300 in the live rankings.

This was an impressive win by Sumit. Hubert had a very close loss against top 100 player Thomas Fabianno at Montreal qualies. He also reached QF at Fergana challenger this year. He was earlier ranked in top 300 and is now lower ranked lower only because he has played a lots of challengers qualies this year instead of futures.

To come back and win against such a player at home speaks volumes of Sumit's talent.

Poor defeat for Sumit today where he squandered multiple break points (including a set point) while his opponent went 3/3.

[SF] (2) Sumit Nagal (IND,264) l. (3) Mats Moraing (GER,344) 3-6, 5-7

Yes, I would not call a defeat against a top 300 level player in good form as a bad defeat. Ok, he did miss some opportunities but the other guys seems to have served big too with 11 aces.

So, Sumit will drop a few places in the rankings with him failing to defend his title here. It looks next he will be up at Indian futures series in trying to recover those points.

Sumit might even play the Istanbul Challenger instead of India Futures , and at Istanbul he is 4 out from the MD , and still the SE's are yet to be cleared and with few more withdrawals he will safely make the MD., So its upto him whether he travels to India or Istanbul

Istanbul Challenger is in the second week of India futures. So, he can still play 1 week in India next week and then go for Istanbul Challenger. Of course, he needs to take this decision today itself as the withdrawal deadline for second week of India futures in today evening. If he does not withdraw by that time, he cannot withdraw later and play Istanbul Challenger.

Sumit has 65 points still to defend in the rest of the year. So, he will have to defend all of those and earn more to try to be inside top 240 to be in line with Australian open qualies. By my estimate, he will need to earn about 100-110 points for rest of the year to make it.

He may not be so confident right now of being able to win multiple matches at challenger level to get a bunch of points in a few weeks. So, he seems to be going for safer option going thru futures route and try to gather points in a phased manner.

Sumit does not withdraw from second week of Chennai futures. So, he will not travel to Istanbul challenger. He will play 2 India futures and then travel for Asian indoor games as I posted in AITA news thread.

Correct decision - the target for the rest of the year should be AO qualies. 5-6 easy futures + CHs at home might do it.

ATP Next Gen Finals (U-21) starts this week in Milan. At 20, does anyone think Sumit has a shot at this next year? (Of course, one need to be top-70 in order to qualify).
