No one is guaranteed anything.

It's just that doubles has an easier field. Our guys cross 25 and get stuck in the 100-200 level and rarely move forward. If the goal is just to make money then play every match you get. If the goal is to win something then focus on whatever is the best fit.

Frankly I don't think our players will ever get into the Top 20 the way it stands today. An Amritraj type guy who beat Connors 5 times out of 11 seems impossible today.

Of course nobody among current lot has top 20 level talent. But, we did not have anyone at that level for 30+ years in men now. We did not have anyone with a top 50 level too in that period. The only one who I think had a top 50 level tennis ability in this period was Yuki Bhambri. But, sadly his fitness was not upto it.

So, even if someone has gets to top 100 level we would take it happily. I still feel Sumit has that ability to get to that top 100 level if he gets fully fit. And I believe he does not have doubles ability to get into top 20 or maybe even top 50 there. So, there is no point in him trying to do that.

RamK has that doubles talent, I think. But aa Prasen said why give up on singles altogether. He can play both singles and doubles on challenger tour currently. Once his doubles ranking gets so much better that he can get into ATP main draws and his singles ranking does not match that pace, singles will automatically fall back.

Sumit has this week fallen outside top 200.

At Sibiu Open, Romania (Clay)

[R1] (8) Sumit Nagal (IND,212) vs. Lucaas Mielder (AUT,325)

Sumit now desparately needs some points. Another 58 points to defend this year from 5 tournaments net 35 if we add back 5 results which are currently outside his top 18. So, in worse case if he does not win anything more this year, he will fall to around 230+ at the end of the year which will make it touch and go for AO qualies. So, needs to earn at least 20-25 points to stay inside top 220.

Yes, in the Live Rankings Sumit has fallen to 223, and it is very important for him to recoup points this week.
Have watched him play in the past weeks ,and nothing wrong with his game , he is playing well and it is only his serve which makes the all important difference in winning and losing.
Against Guistino last week , faced over 16 BP"s , and the Italian just had to pick up few from the 16 on offer , to get the vital break and win the set's and the match, so until he works on his serve with his team , it will be a continuous struggle for him in this modern game , where it is so important to get free points and consolidate by holding with a strong serve .

This is a good confidence boosting win , but next round would be very tough as most likely it would be against the 19yr Czech Jiri Lececka who last week won a Bucharest challenger played on the clay.

Excellent win over an in form player for Sumit.

At Sibiu Open, Romania (Clay)

[R2] (8) Sumit Nagal (IND,212) d. Jiri Lececka (CZE,177) 75 63

Next,

[QF] (8) Sumit Nagal (IND,212) vs. Geoffrey Blacaneaux (FRA,297)

French player upset 4th seed Damit Dzmhur in second round. But, Sumit had beaten Geoffrey in straight sets last year in a challenger.

Sameer mentioned that Sumit needed to gain 25 or more ATP points to make the Aussie Open draw. The path is clear now -- he has to win his next match for that to happen. Go Sumit.

Very nice to see Sumit back to winning ways after a pretty long hiatus. Confidence is the key, and that seems to be back, especially with that good R2 win over a hot player.

@pkbasu Sumit has not been fit for the past several weeks and can't play on hard courts. Hope that issue/niggle has got sorted out.

I think as we discussed in that Ankita discussion a month back - we will start seeing buzz around mens tennis again on our forum. Hopefully Prajnesh can also drop his rankings by November and then it should all be upward growth from there on for an year or two with wins over higher ranked opponents being a regular theme.

He should pick it up. It is not a good idea to lose it.

Best win for Sumit in quite awhile. Whether it was loss of form or fitness or both, hopefully he back playing at a solid level in clay challengers where he is capable of being one of the better players in the draw on most weeks.

Good to see Sumit scored a straight sets win over the in-form player after 1-4 down.
