Well, he still has some doubles to play at Rio. Make some small money, which doesn't hurt!

Good that he picked up a few points without using up a PR. He will move up around 75 spots to near 560, as per live tennis rankings.

In a way it is good that Sumit lost in doubles early. He has to again plays singles qualies next week. So, playing too many doubles matches this week would not have been good and anyway as of now he is not taking doubles seriously.

Hope for another decent run next week. If he can get inside top 300 before his PR runs out ( early next year I think), he can get directly get into at least some of the challengers.

Looks like he is. I am a bit unsure when his PR period ends. There is a 9 month period where a player can use it after he starts playing. Is it 9 months from the first tournament which he plays in or first tournament which he enters with PR.

ATP rulebook says-
, the entry protection shall be in effect for the first nine (9) singles and the first nine (9)doubles tournaments that the player competes* in using the entry protection (excluding wild cards and entries as a direct acceptance with his current position in the ATP Rankings) or for the period up to nine (9) months beginning with the first tennis event, including Special Events – Exhibitions, that the player competes in, whichever occurs first.
Sumit started competing in the week of 11th April but he entered that week with his regular ranking and used his PR first at French open in the week 23rd May. From the rulebook it appears that his 9 month period will start from 11th April which means the Australian open qualies which is the week of 9th January, 2023 would be his last week where he can use his PR.

He has used up 6 of his 9 PR spots so far. So, only 3 left of which 1 he will use for Australian open, other 2 at some challengers this year. Unless he goes and really wins big points in remaining tournaments this year or at Pune ATP ( where hopefully he will get at least a qualifying wild card) or at Australian open, he will have to work hard thru challenger qualies or futures post AO next year.

I read the rule as the nine-month period starting in May not April.

The think the rule is pretty clear that it is 9 months from first tennis event back which was in April.

The first clause indicates that the period expires as soon as he has used up his 9+9 PR spots if it is sooner than 9 months. Seems redundant but it clarifies that entry using WC or actual ranking does not use up any of the 9+9 PR spots.

In any case, he seems to have timed it to allow Aussie Open participation.

As anybody with half a brain would have if it was close. So, good on him.

At the Challenger 80 in Coquimbo, Chile (Clay) in Q2...

Phew, I needed some good tennis to watch after that RamK loss, and this match started right on cue. Sumit is hitting well, and has converted the first two BPs he got. Up 4-1 and serving in the first set. Faced a BP after a close call on a second serve caused a DF. But he saved it and held for 5-1... Some beautiful play at the net where he punched the volley properly to push Martinez back and force an error, and then a strong 10-shot rally at the AD-out set point. Converts the third of his three BPs this set. 6-1

Second set: Sumit dropped serve with some loose play at 15 but went after Martinez in the next game winning 4 points in a row and breaking for 1-1... He has gone 4/4 in converting BPs today, which is great. Held at love, for 2-1... He won 9 points in a row there. Now 3-2... A 14-shot rally where he effortlessly moved up to the net and punched a volley in at the right time, caused a 15-40 BP, and here comes the BH DTL heat. 5 of 5 in break chances, which leaves Martinez totally exasperated. 4-2... God, such clean tennis with accurate shots to perfect spots on court. This is great stuff from Sumit. Martinez isn't playng badly and is not making mistakes in his shots, but Sumit is just playing perfectly. 5-2 after a love hold. Holy crap, I cannot believe the perfect shots Sumit is hitting in the next game. Martinez was shell shocked at a return winner and then a couple of rallies. 30-40 match point, and Sumit comes up with yet another beauty (for 6/6 on BPs) and MM is left to wonder if the letter is a G or a D in Sumit's last name. 61 62

[Q2] (8) Sumit Nagal (IND,638) d. (5) Mirko Martinez (SUI,567), 61 62

It is 2 of 2 in qualifying into challengers so far today for us, with Mukund at Busan and Sumit at Coquimbo. Can Sriram upset the 4th seed at Ambato and make it 3 of 3? (That match starts in 90 minutes or so around 10:00 to 10:45 pm IST. Update: Balaji did make it 3 of 3, with an upset of the 4th seed in the qualies, and he continued the Sumit streak of converting BPs, with 3 of 3 in that category for 9 in a row by Indians)

Good to see that Sumit's game is back to his normal top 200 level. Now, he needs at least a couple of deep runs in the challenger main draws to get inside the top 300 and not have to qualify in.

[R1] (Q) Sumit Nagal (IND,565) vs (3) Daniel Altmaier (GER,103)
