Possibly Sumit may become the new Indian #2 after Newport

Great to see this consistency from Sumit! Great opportunity to make his 5th clay SF in the last few months!

He is definitely playing at a very good level on clay (at least at a top 150 level and perhaps higher). Whether he gets near the top 100 will depend on whether he can do well on hard courts. Of course, remaining fit is also a key. Therefore, hoping he can go all the way in this tournament and then take a 1-2 week break.

If RamK doesn't get thru qualifying at Newport, he will likely fall below 215 in the rankings, which will essentially drop him below Sumit.

Sumit is the only seed in the bottom half of the draw, implying he is the favourite to make the final now.

He is at 220 in the live rankings. Sumit plays qualifier Aslan Karatsev (RUS, 343; CH 153 in 2015) in the QF.

Sumit wins the first set 6-4. From 4-1 up, it went to 4-4 but Sumit stayed strong to win the next 2 games. Karatsev is a bit hitter though. So, Sumit will have to stay at the top of his game.

Sumit does grind out a win!

[QF] (8) Sumit Nagal (IND,224) d. Aslan Karatsev (RUS,343) 6-4, 7-6(4)

He did fight back after being 1-3 and 3-5 down in the second set. Sumit is now a #204 in the live rankings which would be a career high. A title would get him to around 180.

Up next,

[SF] Sumit Nagal (IND, 224) v. Danilo Petrovic (SRB, 285)

Sumit’s consistency on clay over the past couple of months has catapulted him to a new career high of 204. Beating Petrovic (ranked 285 now, with a career high of 220, worse than Sumit’s previous CH) will take him to 201. Very exciting progress by the 21 year old. He can now play the hard court season mixing in Challengers and ATP qualifiers judiciously in preparation for the US Open qualifiers.

Sumit's show has brightened up my summer quite a bit so far. Was depressed otherwise, about Yuki, RamK and Prajnesh (though Prajnesh may be getting back to form - and RamK is unpredictable as always)....

He should focus on post Wimbledon clay court season too.

There is Bastad/Umang, hamburg/gstaad and Austria in July. Why not try for the same.

A good fighting win against Aslan, so next is a Serbian giant, 6'8" tall, Petrovic ... Go Sumit.

He is doing that. He is in the initial entry list of Umag ATP qualies and will be entering Hamburg/Gstasd, Kitzbuhel too. His strength is clay at the moment and good that he is trying to maximise on that. Then, in August he can go to US and play a couple of challengers on hard courts before US open qualies.

Good plan, he should be aiming to get into the top 150 by the end of the extended clay season which is very realistic as long as he stays fit.

In the SF, he is on the brink of defeat trailing 5-7 2-5, serving to save the match.

A semifinal loss once again. He has lost some big points in challengers with this string of SF losses :(

Very strange.

Clearly not a fitness issue given he plays week after week.
