Sumit's match about to start ... ATP's Live stream

Breaks FMA at 15-40 with two good FHCC winners to the lines and then a great forehand DTL, and holds at 15... 2-0. Got away with a few short balls that FMA was reluctant to move up on. Sumit needs to stay away from that or he will pay for it later. Two mistakes at the net. One, the usual "hit the overhead out" shot that every Indian is adept at. Then a missed volley at the end of a good 15 shot rally. Broken right back at 15-40... 2-2. FMA holds at love. Sumit looks a bit off-color today, and does not have the zip on his shots on a consistent basis. But a good game from SM just as I say it. 3-3... It went even from them, but FMA looking a bit stronger. At 4-5, 30-30 a mishit on the 15th shot of a rally made in a set point and FMA attacked a second serve and one short ball from Sumit. 4-6.

Sumit breaks him at 30-40 to lead but gets broken back after saving three BPs. 1-2 on serve. Sumit again totally off-color. Just not feeling today, for sure. Gets broken at 0-40... Now down a break 1-3... Both players irritated at disturbances around from the spectators and whatever else. Sumit mishits a couple of balls. Hits the racket hard on the ground multiple times, disgusted at himself. FMA holds, 1-4... Meligeni hits 4 balls out, and SM holds, 2-4... Just bad tennis all around, actually, from both guys. Haha, 7 shots in a row by these guys going out. Just for variation and excitement, FMA hits one into the net :) ... He holds at 40-30, after trying hard to hit one out and failing, and then Sumit hitting it out hard to help him out. He holds. 2-5... This his hilarious; one shot hit out after another by these guys. SM at 40-0... And finally a WINNER. His first ace; and he holds. 3-5... As FMA serves for the match, the ump checked the spot and called a shot out to help SM for 30-30, but after (finally) a decent shot exchange, Sumit again hits a shot off his rim, and that is how the day has gone for him. I guess his racket got the final laugh after being abused enough to evoke a code violation warning earlier. Meligeni holds for a win.

Looks like Sumit is not playing next week? Probably a good idea to take some rest and recharge the batteries, after Covid and all that recently.

He is playing the Valencia challenger in Spain the week after (Nov 21st) using a PR entry.

Sumit is at the Valencia Challenger in Spain (Red Clay). Playing a qualifier TBD. Since Anirudh/VSP are also there for doubles, we will follow the matches at the European Challengers thread.

Sumit had a rather successful outing at the Indian challengers and is currently ranked #379 in the world (#2 in the country).

Next week, he’s 3 spots out of the Antalya Challenger qualifying list. Whether he will make it or not is TBD.

Won't agreem he had rather a very average one. Could have done better. Few years ago we were winning these challengers.

^^^ I am in between "average" and "successful" for Sumit. Let us settle for an "above average" success, compared to his average in the 9 months before this!

Edit: Actually he had 70 points from 26 events before this (less than 3 ATP points average), and 59 from just three India challengers (avg 19.3 pts). I would say much more than average. Maybe Dinesh is more correct :)

I would agree that it was "rather successful", given where Sumit's career is right now. He was the only Indian making R2 of singles -- which is depressing from an Indian standpoint, but good for Sumit. These were slightly higher level Challengers than the ones Sumit and Yuki used to win in India in 2017 and 2018. (Yuki did win a few Challengers at this level in Taiwan in those years and earlier, 2015, but I don't think Sumit did except one in Latin America a couple of years ago).

Just catching up with this thread. Ah, an Fe. Meligeni from Brazil. Had to look him up. Turns out he is the nephew of that Meligeni who lost to a certain Paes to give us an Olympic medal. His sister is also a tennis player.

Sumit is now at his rightful place as India #1 with a ranking of 374. Looks like he is currently he is training at Nensel acadamy in Germany for clay season. Most likely will start with qualifying for one of the 2 clay challengers next week if he gets in.

Sumit is right now 2 out from the qualifying draw at Sanremo (Italy) challenger, and 4 out from the Q draw at the Girona (Spain) challenger. He would have easily made the Lille challenger (France) but didn't enter there, it seems. He was quite a bit down the ALT list a couple of days ago when I checked, so there has been good movement in the lists. The SE and WC spots are all to be decided at the two challengers, so he should make it in by tomorrow, probably at Sanremo, if all goes well. (He has made qualifying entry for the Barletta challenger in Italy the next week, so I assume he will go to Sanremo by default).

Clay is his fav surface. I just hope he has over come his injury issues and is now ready to do well here. In singles he is our only steady player.

He looked like he was not impaired by the earlier injury or surgery issues anymore at the Indian challengers. He did get banged up a bit due to all the matches he played in quick succession. He is probably not at his peak conditioning level though, as he seemed to lose a bit of steam after a set or two rather often. The break and some practice in Europe has hopefully helped. Let us see how he does on clay.

Lille challenger is on indoor hard courts, not the preferred surface for Sumit. Sanremo and Girona are on clay courts.
