That was an impressive scoreline. Now is the real test. Hope he wins at least a set but ideally the whole match.

Sumit broke Daniel again to lead 5-1 but got broken while serving for the set. 5-2 now, still up 1 break.

Sumit breaks again and takes the first set 6-2.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread

Sumit had some opportunities at the beginning of the second set to break his opponent, but couldn't convert...

At 6-5* 0-40, Sumit had 3 match points but couldn't convert... After a couple of deuce points, Sumit gets a 4th chance to close the match out, but misses that with a FH mishit that sails long... And slips at the baseline while trying to get to a drop shot from Altmaier... And finally a hold for Altmaier to force a second set tie-break...

Second set tie-break

*0-0 Sumit to start proceeding... A long rally and Sumit missed picking up a drop volley, even though he reached there in time...
0-1* A bad call didn't affect Sumit as his opponent netted his FH... back on serve...FH long from his opponent near the net and give Sumit one more mini-break...
*2-1 Sumit's BH DTL slightly wide to give the mini-break back... Wonderful FH CC by Sumit followed up by a drop shot to win the point...
3-2* Sumit's FH service return is long... Unlucky for Sumit as he tried to pass the opponent with his BH DTL, but caught the net tape and Altmaier takes the point home with a FH CC...
*3-4 Altmaier's BH DTL a little wide to give Sumit the point... Sumit's FH caught the net at almost the same spot, and he had a chance to get back in the point but his FH DTL was a little wide.... Down a mini-break now...
4-5* An opportunity for Altmaier to close out the set... But a series of forcing FHs from Nagal to set up the point and finished it off with a FH volley to bring it back on serve... Strong serve from Altmaier sets up the point and he wins it with an overhead to set up a set-point...
*5-6 Sumit trying multiple times to get his toss right in the midst of windy conditions... He serves wide to Altmaier's FH and makes him scale the width of the court before finishing off with an overhead... He was in control on the next point too, but caught the net when looking for a FH winner... another set point for Altmaier...
6-7* Wonderful bit of court craft from Sumit as he covered the full width and depth of the court before getting to the drop-shot and finished it off with a BH winner... Altmaier tried a cute drop-shot but it was nowhere close to the top of the net...
*8-7 Another match point for Sumit, his first in this tie-break... Wonderful FH from Altmaier, but great defense from Sumit and in a bid to finish off the point, Altmaier came up to the net, but only found the net with his shot...

Phew! what a win woohoo

[R1] (Q) Sumit Nagal (IND,565) d. (3) Daniel Altmaier (GER,103) 62 76(7)

And he does it!!! (And thanks Prashanth for the match details; I was in and out till the end of the second set)

Jeez, this was becoming a horror show at the end of the second set, when he had triple match points, faced two great points from Altmeier and then had the ball clip the net on what looked like a sure winner in a 20 shot rally. Deuce. He got a 4th match point on a terrific return winner, and then got a 5th MP on a double fault too. He wasn't playing badly, but DA was up to the task, staying alive (he was constantly yelling to himself "fight fight" to stay alive). Then in the tiebreaker, Sumit served a set pt at 5-6 and faced another one after dropping a mini, at 6-7... He saved that off DA's serve and then got his 6th match point at 8-7 on his own serve. Finally he converted one for a terrific upset win. Wow :notworthy: :notworthy:

Who cares if our players get seeds in the main draw? If luck doesn't help you, you just win it with pluck! Karman and Sumit did their jobs today in style, upsetting the 2nd and 3rd seeds.

This was enough to move up some 44 spots to #521, as per live rankings... But another tough match is coming up for Sumit.

Nice win for Sumit! Now the draw opens up, so hope he can take advantage and make a deep run here (perhaps all the way to the title :D )

Meanwhile, Sumit and Daniel Rincon made the doubles QF without playing the R1... They were to play Genaro Alberto Olivieri and Juan Bautista Torres of ARG, but they withdrew due to a Torres shoulder issue, and no alternates seem to be available there. Anyway, Sumit gets a nice day of rest tomorrow. Well deserved. The doubles QF will be on Thursday or Friday, after the singles R1 on Thursday. His partner Rincon had also qualified into the singles draw but lost to the 6th seed today.

Sumit gets $320 from doubles and $860 from singles, so he has more than broken-even for the week.

As I said. The real test begins now. He is three matches tired. But has a rest day. All the best.

Excellent win. But, Sumanta (Omkara) is right, it is not easy to slug out match after match against these strong Europeans and South Americans on clay. Sumit does seem to get tired doing that after 3-4 matches in a week. One day's rest is good for him and I have hope that he will come refreshed and wins at least a couple more matches this week if not more. He needs one or two big runs in challengers to get his ranking close or inside top 300 before his PR runs out.

Guess he should leave his dbls engagement aside till the end of the season and concentrate only on the singles in order to optimize the singles points.

Just watched the last few games against Altmeier and noticed that Sumit runs around his backhand a lot which means he has to run around a lot to win a point. Clay court tennis is a grind and it is even more of a grind for him. Perhaps, he can work on his backhand in the offseason, otherwise I fear his body may not hold up well to the grind.

Everyone has to be fit enough to win 4-5 matches in a week and at least a couple of weeks in series if they want to be a top-100 player or so. And, if you have a weak backhand that affects your fitness, might as well try to fix it to some extent.

Leander, Ramk and now Sumit. How did their junior days coaches justify such negligence?
