Yes, it was a tough one. I expected Sumit to win but it seems De Bakker has run into form in last few days. He went on to win the title beating 28th ranked Balazs in the final. Last month De Bakker had beaten top 25 player Mannarino in davis cup.

Anyway, useful 8 points for Sumit here. He needs to get some good points in first half of the year before he starts defending points from thereafter. Off to $25K futures in Xavia,Spain next week.

Sumit had an easy first round and got thru it comfortably.

At $25K Spain F6 Futures, Xabia, Spain (Clay)

[R1] (1) Sumit Nagal (IND,223) d. (WC) Dariusz Lipka (POL,NR) 60 62

He faces a Brazilian next.

[R2] (1) Sumit Nagal (IND,223) vs, Joao Menezes (BRA,529)

Menezes has won a $25K title in Spain in September where he had beaten a couple of top 250 players. So, this will be a tougher match.

Sumit lost in a 3 setter.

At $25K Spain F6 Futures, Xabia, Spain (Clay)

[R2] (1) Sumit Nagal (IND,223) l, Joao Menezes (BRA,529) 16 64 46

Sumit's form this year has not been good after moving to new coach and all. I hope it is a temporary blip and he will get back to winning ways soon.

Sumit is second seed in qualies of $50K Marbella challenger in Spain. He has a very tough Q1 match though against 282nd ranked Italian Giannini Quinzi who had a main draw ATP win last year.

RamK will be in main draw here.

Gianluigi Quinzi was a part of last year’s NextGen ATP after getting a WC being the local talent. Would be an interesting match, although this being on hard court gives Sumit a slight edge.

Sumit is now at a career high ranking of 213.

He is #24 in the under 21 ranking which counts for Next Gen events. He is just 1 spot behind 2 Koreans - Duck Hee Lee and Soonwoo Kwon who are ranked 211 and 212 respectively. If he moves ahead of 2 Koreans, he will be highest ranked Asian in under 21 ATP rankings. It will be interesting to see how Sumit progresses as compared to 2 Koreans who were ahead of him in the juniors.

After the Davis Cup he would be mostly playing on Clay in the run up to the FO qualies , and Sumeet thrives on clay as evident by his upset of Marcell Granollers and few good run's may well edge him closer to 175 and above.

Ok, thanks. Kwon did not seem to be that good in juniors but has come on strongly in pros early.

Seong Chan Hong started strong in pros in 2016 making it to top 350 at 18+ but it seems like some injuries may have hampered him as he has not played full schedule since last year. Won a futures title a couple of weeks back in Japan. So, he seems to be getting back.

It will be great if Sumit can do better than all these Koreans in pros.

Sumit lost in 3 sets .

At $50K+H Barletta Challenger 2018, Italy

[R1] Sumit Nagal (IND,213) l. Goncalo Oliveira (POR,214) 64 36 26

After winning the first set, Sumit was 3-1 up in the second set and had a break point to go 4-1 up. From there seems to be a complete meltdown. Lately he has been having lot of these matches where he suddenly loses control after seemingly in winning mode. I guess facing some crisis of confidence due to low number of wins of late.

Sumit is playing all the clay challengers in Europe in the run up to the French open qualies-

This looks like his schedule -

April 23- $50K(+H) Francavilla Challenger, Italy
April 30- $75K(+H) Ostrava Challenger, Czech Republic
May 7- $50K(+H) Braga Challenger, Portugal
May 14- $50K(+H) Lisbon Challenger, Portugal ( entry list not out but assuming this since he entered in Portugal in the earlier week)
Ma 21- French open qualies.

There are bigger challenger in Europe during this period but I am glad that Sumit has chosen smaller ones. Hope he gets back to some sort of form in these challengers before French open.

At $50K(+H) Francavilla Challenger, Italy (Clay)

[R1] Sumit Nagal (IND,219) vs. (Q) Antoine Hoang (FRA,243)

Hoang is a talented French 22 year old who made the SF of a challenger in January . So, a tough one for Sumit.
