Re: Sumit Nagal thread
At the Braunsweig Challenger, Sumit draws Brazilian Filipe Meligeni Alves of Brazil.
Looks a decent player at 145 and 128 CH couple of months ago and has qualified for both the slams FO & Wimby.
So not to be taken lightly as these innocuous looking R1 can just prove dangerous.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
So if Sumit wins the title then he will get to 896 points which is about 54 in ranking. Other players will also move too so it will be close to 54. Winning the title will do a lot and bring him closer to becoming a Top 50 player.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
We can talk about winning the tournament after he reaches at least SF or so. It is premature to talk about it now when he is yet to play his first round and that too is a rough one.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
Yeah. Felipe Alves is not an easy opponent at all. Sumit may not be fully back to his clay form after just a couple of days of clay practice, too. Let us not start counting wins and all that.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
Sumit will have to work for each win even at this level. Most top 200 players (especially those that are clay courters) have the game that matches up to his game, so he will need to be fully focused to grind out wins.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
Sumit wins in straight sets after a bit of a scare in the second set when the Brazilian broke him and led 4-1
But a strange end to the match when Sumit was serving for the match the Brazilian was sobbing inconsolably at the service line, and surely didn't appear game related and the umpire had to walk upto him to check on him and lost that game and the match with tearfull wet eyes.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
At the Challenger 125 in Braunschweig, GER (Clay)
[R1] (2) Sumit Nagal (IND,71) d. Felipe Meligeni Alves (BRA,145), 61 64
so
[QF] (2) Sumit Nagal (IND,71) vs Pedro Cachin (ARG,117)

You can watch ATP's match recording here.Rajiv wrote: ↑Tue Jul 09, 2024 10:23 am But a strange end to the match when Sumit was serving for the match the Brazilian was sobbing inconsolably at the service line, and surely didn't appear game related and the umpire had to walk upto him to check on him and lost that game and the match with tearfull wet eyes.
I can't figure out what happened. I watched from Felipe Melieni-Alves being 3-0 up and Sumit serving 15-40, about to go two breaks down. FMA messed up the chances to go 4-0 up, and then Sumit hit some really good shots with FMA hitting some wild shots. I think he started blaming himself and lost his cool. Once Sumit broke him twice and was to serve at 61 64, FMA knew he had messed up his chances and was not going to get back in the match. He went back to the back wall, put his face to it and started crying. Sumit didn't know what to do, and the ump had to go talk to FMA.
I have never seen any player make another guy cry, if that is what Sumit just did. I don't know what else it was.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
I have a feeling there is more to it. Players at this level don't cry because they lost a Challenger R1 match. Wimbledon final, sure. I think he may be going through some issues in his personal life with health, lovelife, financial etc. Losing the match must have triggered this.jayakris wrote: ↑Tue Jul 09, 2024 12:36 pmYou can watch ATP's match recording here.Rajiv wrote: ↑Tue Jul 09, 2024 10:23 am But a strange end to the match when Sumit was serving for the match the Brazilian was sobbing inconsolably at the service line, and surely didn't appear game related and the umpire had to walk upto him to check on him and lost that game and the match with tearfull wet eyes.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
Cachin is also a solid clay courter, so another potentially tough match for Sumit.
He is 68 in the live rankings, and is very likely to have a new career high (previous CH of 71) even if he doesn't go further here as only 2 players behind him can likely exceed his current point total. Hopefully, he will go deep here and move up even further into the 60s in the rankings.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
Sumit is 0-2 against Kachin in head to head with both losses on clay but they were in 2018 and 2022 ( FO qualies). So, it is a good chance for Sumit to avenge those losses. It wont be easy though as Kachin has beaten quite a few good players on clay.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
Agree. Pretty sure that there is something more there. The court troubles were most probably only triggering something else he was keeping inside and trying to get past using tennis. Then tennis also failed and tears got out. True that tennis players won't be crying otherwise for a challenger R1 loss.Sanjay wrote: ↑Tue Jul 09, 2024 4:16 pm I have a feeling there is more to it.
