Re: Sumit Nagal thread
He fought hard in the second set and was in fact 5-3 up but could not close it out and Gasqet came back to take the set in tie break and with that the match.
At € 1.8M Hamburg European Open 2019, Germany
[R1] (Q) Sumit Nagal (IND,207) l. Richard Gasquet (FRA,65) 26 67(2)
Still, a good experience for Sumit playing his first ATP 500 tournament main draw against a former top 10 player.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
Good effort by Sumit. Should have gone to the 3rd set. Hope this experience and success will give Sumit confidence for the rest of the summer season, and more importantly he can hopefully stay healthy, which is something our guys have trouble doing in singles!

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
Sumit posted that he could not give his best in yesterday's match due to ligament tear. He has to be careful here not to aggravate this injury by keep playing. He is in very good form and would not want an extended break now.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
Ligament tear? So Prasen was indeed prophetic when he said 2-3 weeks ago that it was only a matter of time "before he gets injured" .... Prasen, why didn't you predict Imran Khan getting a ligament tear (slipping at the white house steps or something)... Why the poor guy Sumit?

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
So, Sumit has broken into top 200 for the first time in his career and is now ranked at a career high of 196 in the latest updated ATP singles rankings.
At one point of time, top 200 looked as something unachievable for our players as we did not have anyone cross that for 8 long year since 2001 till 2009. Since 2009 though we have had 6 player crossing that milestone- Somdev, Yuki,Prajnesh,RamK,Saketh and now Sumit in last 10 years. So, it is a very good period for Indian mens tennis as such. Hope Sumit goes on to breach top 100 soon.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
That makes Sumit the 19th-highest-ranked Indian in the Open era (or, at least since computer rankings began in 1973). Just 20 Indian men have been ranked in the top-200, so it is a charmed circle Sumit has entered. Yet to turn 22, there is surely lots of upside for Sumit's ranking in the years ahead -- if he can stay fit.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
I believe Prakash (career high 154) was also inside the top 200 in that window.sameerph wrote: ↑Mon Jul 29, 2019 9:01 am So, Sumit has broken into top 200 for the first time in his career and is now ranked at a career high of 196 in the latest updated ATP singles rankings.

Prakash wasn't trained or grew up in India. Happy to have him represent us but the level of accomplishment is not the same.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
Congratulations to Sumit for qualifying into his first grand slam at just 22. He is one of the youngest Indians to play main draw at slams.
It has been an excellent year for Sumit and he will move up to India #2 after this and will be ranked somewhere around # 173 to 175 after this effort.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread
Yes, Sumit is younger (22 years and a week) than Yuki was (22 years and 6+ months) when he qualified for the AO in 2015 for the first time. Slightly older than Leander was (21) when he first qualified for the US Open in 1994 (a full quarter-century ago). Ramesh Krishnan was 18 when he qualified into both the US Open and Wimbledon main draws in 1979 (the year he won the FO and Wimbledon junior singles titles). At the US Open, 18 year old Ramesh beat Phil Dent in straight sets in R1 before losing to Kriek in R2. Eight years later, Ramesh crushed Kriek (in a match I witnessed) in R3 on the way to the QF (1987).
Vijay Amritraj also played Wimbledon and the US Open main draws when he was 18 (in 1972). Ramanathan Krishnan first qualified for the Wimbledon singles main draw in 1953 when he was 16! But that was a different era.
