At $50K+H Bastad Challenger 2018, Sweden

[R1] Sumit Nagal (IND,253) l. (Q) Filip Horansky (SVK,287) 26 retd.

Looks like he may be having some injury issues to have such a bad run.

He might be injured or taking time off to work on his game. He withdrew from all 3 weeks of challengers, last week, this week and next week.

He has a tough final qualifying round coming up.

At $150K(+H) Genoa Challenger (Clay)

[Q3] (3) Sumit Nagal (IND,306) vs. (5) Juan Pablo Varillas (PER,327)

Varilas has a challenger SF last month. So, Sumit will have to shake off his bad form to win here.

Sudden flurry of excellent tennis from Sumit, who seems to specialise in being asleep on the circuit for several months and then come sparkling to life all of a sudden! Jan Satral made R2 of the US Open in 2016 (losing to Monfils), so beating him was a fine achievement. Then this easy win over 22 year old Varillas -- who made R2 of a Challenger last month (his last tournament) and qualified in and made the SF of another Challenger the previous week (last week of July). Clearly someone who is in form, but along comes our Sumit and absolutely clobbers him -- after several months in which Sumit couldn't win any match...May these wins multiply!!

I suspect that Sumit was not 100% fit. That can only be the explanation for his unexpected string of losses.

This is the first time Sumit has won 3 straight matches since a challenger in Spain in March. So, welcome return to form for Sumit at a time when he needs some points desperately to ensure that his ranking does not fall much till end of the year.

Sumit plays an Italian next.

At $150K+H Genoa Challenger 2018, Italy

[R1] (Q) Sumit Nagal (IND,306) vs. Stefano Napolitano (ITA,209)

Stefano is coming back from US hard court season where reached the final of a challenger but lost in the first round of US open qualifying. He has had better results on hard courts this year than clay. So, hope Sumit uses his clay prowess well against him.
