Congratulation to Karunuday Singh for winning a double crown by winning singles & doubles titles at this week's $10K futures in Delhi. I think he deserves his own thread after winning this futures title.

These are his singles results this week-

20 year old Karunuday Singh played as a somphore. He did not have too much success as expected & missed major part of the season due to injury.

Hopefully, he will progress well on pro circuit after getting a boost from winning this title.

This was a very impressive performance indeed from Karunuday Singh (who only turns 20 in November this year). Recall he beat Yuki Bhambri in a Futures tournament in Texas last October too (although Yuki was coming off an injury then too). To have a 2-0 career record against India's best prospect (albeit one who is 16 months younger) is a pretty impressive achievement. Karunuday is showing genuine talent!

Really no explanation for why pipeline on womens tennis looks so bare when we expected it to grow after Sania's emergence. Traditionally & before Sania emerged, we have always produced world class tennis players on mens side. So, at the moment it looks like Sania was more of an exception of individual genius emerging on womens side.

It seems Karunuday has decided to quit US college tennis & university of Illinois after only 1 year & is going to persue pro tennis now. It seems he took some time off after that first futures title in June to recover from some niggles. He is now training in Thailand at Paul Dale's acadamy & will compete in futures in Indonesia & Kuwait before futures series in India in November.

Interesting move on his part as he has not so far shown the talent that he will do all that well as a professional (say top 100 or better). However, if he is serious on becoming a professional, this is the better course to see how far he can go as tennis is a young person's sport.

I almost forgot that Karun has won a title this year .Good move ,hope he comes up with somemore good wins.

I would have liked him to be in college for at least one more year, but I guess even a year may have helped him a bit. May be he found college and tennis a bit too tough to do together. That can happen to some players. It is indeed a bit of a tough life for NCAA athletes, especially at place like Illinois where academics itself isn't all that easy even for athletes, and the tennis program is topnotch serious.

I think he missed first year due to injury. So, it would have been his junior year this year. But, he is nearing 21 & just won a futures title. So, thinking would be he would be gaining more from playing on pro tour rather than play one more year in college & enter pros at around 22.

Yes, I think in his circumstances, it is pretty reasonable to get out and play pros... Jay

He had a few decent results this year (including that Futures title) so decided to leave college before he turns 21 (on November 19th this year). Probably a bit premature (he could have played one more year of college and still capitalized on the points from his Futures title until mid-June next year -- so, about a month or slightly more, after leaving college). But perhaps the University of Illinois coaching staff for tennis wasn't as good as Virginia...

He is ranked 701 currently, and needs a few breakthrough wins soon to advance further.

That explains why he has not played on pro circuit in last couple of months. This is a bit surprising as I thought he has turned pro after quitting Illinois university last year.

It is early in the season. Georgia is ranked 4 while Illinois is ranked 17 -- so it is clearly a move up for Karunday. The important thing to see Karunuday's position in the Georgia depth chart. In the preseason rankings, Georgia has players ranked 6 (Wil Spencer); 24 (Sadio Doumbia, 34 (Juan Spir), 85 (Kevin King), 97 (Juan Melian-Puigventos) ahead of 100 (Karunuday Singh). In the SEC tournament that is going on, Karunuday is to play Doumbia (also of Georgia) and this match will show us how he might fit into the Georgia scheme of things. I don't think it makes sense for him to be 6th on the depth chart.
