[Q2] 1-Ramkumar Ramanathan (IND,115) l. Marco Trungelliti (ARG,188) 46 36

Disappointing loss for Ramkumar, but this is perhaps to be expected during the clay season -- when the Latin Americans and Europeans will do much better than their rankings suggest. Let us hope a few LL spots open up. (Even one could be useful...).

Bernard Tomic got a wildcard into the main draw. Ah, the privileges of being a one-time prodigy -- even when you are an ageing one!

Oh, thanks, Rajeev. I posted about him being 3-4 out from qualies draw ( based on MTF ) but deleted that post now. Good to know that he made the qualies draw.

Good move by Ramkumar to play the two Masters, especially since the qualifying draws are relatively small -- and there's lots of money and reasonable points available, plus top level match practice.
His career moves have always been better planned than Yuki's. (It makes little sense to travel all the way east to Korea now, and then fly across to play the FO without clay practice; Yuki needs to take some scheduling tips from RamK's team!).

At the Madrid Masters qualifiers,  Ram has a tough opener against the 4th Seed & 74th ranked Frenchman Pierre Herbert.

Ram has in him to cause major upsets, and a relatively easier opponent awaits him in Stefano Travaglia or Evegeny Donskoy in the Final Round for a Main Draw entry.

Go Ram !!!

Herbert isn't a typical clay courter as he plays mostly on hard courts and played many of the grass court events last year. Of course, he is a really good player (and is good in doubles), so a tough match but about as winnable as can be at this level.

Yes the French Man mostly plays the Hard Courts but his last outing was at Monte Carlo on clay where he didn't do bad either , went through the qualies and won 3 straight matches eventually losing to the 5th seed Dimitrov in the PreQtrs in 3 close sets , So he is no bunny on clay.

But Ram has an uncanny ability to raise his game , so won't be surprised if he pulls this one through.

16 points and US$6000 awaits the First qualifying round winner.First Match court # 6 11 Am Madrid Time.

RamK lost 46 36 against Pierre Herbert. Only 1 break in each set was enough for Herbert to win the match.

Off to next week at Rome qualies. Hope he gets at least a couple of matches there before French open qualies the week after that.

RamK did not make it for the Rome qualies. I wish he would have signed for one of the 3 clay challengers which are there in Europe next week.

All our players are going without much match practice on European clay for French open- Yuki will have no tournament before French open, RamK plays 2 ATP qualies but only 3 matches and now 2 weeks break before French qualies, Prajnesh with 3 weeks break before French qualies. Only Sumit played 3 challengers in Europe but lost in first round of all 3. Not the ideal preparation .

Yuki never withdrew from Busan $150K. He is seeded 2nd and slated to play Nishioka in R1.

Maybe Ram should have have tried one of the grass ATP's where he had a good chance of entry compared to tough ones which he tried earlier in the year , But instead he is only concentrating on Challengers and has made the MD draw of all the 3 at Surbitron , Ilkley, Nottingham.

Sadly Antalya a purple patch in his career , he wont be able to play where he has huge points to defend as it clashes with Wimby Qualies.

Challenging 4 weeks for Ram as he is defending 57 from Antalya 36 from 2 Sing futures total of 93 points ,

The good news here is that the Antalya points won't drop off until the week before Wimbledon, so he should still be seeded in the qualifiers there. The Challengers should prepare him very well for Roehampton; and if he qualifies in, he will have defended most of the Antalya points!

Yes these are big challengers and even if he makes QF's or higher in each of one them , coupled with a decent outing at Wimby qualies than he should be safely be able to protect those points.

Yes Antalya points fall off after the W qualies but then in the 2nd week of July 48 points of Winnetka have to be defended , so for next 6-7 weeks the points defend tally balloons upto 141.

If he qualifies into Wimbledon and wins a round in the main draw, a lot of worries for the rest of the year will be taken care of. I hope he enters for Newport too immediately after Wimby.
