Couldn’t have asked for an easier first round match at a 500 level event. Too bad RamK couldn’t take advantage of it.

Yes the Challenger grind will take him to Ismaning, Vilnius & Ortisei for the comming 3 weeks.

And with 20k earned at Tokyo enables him to cross 200k mark in prize money for 2022,the highest he has in his Tennis career in a calender year, erasing his record of 199K earned in 2018.

More in doubles I guess than singles ?

As for scheduling, I think instead of going back to Europe he should have stayed in Asia. Next couple of weeks, he would have had to play qualies in big challengers in Korea. But, after that there are easier challengers available in Japan/Australia. In fact first week of 2 weeks of challengers in Australia in Playford has a pretty weak files with initial cut-off of 485 and Prajnesh/Mukund got in easily.

Rajiv, you can convey that to RamK as a suggestion particularly for subsequent weeks. Playing these tough challengers in Europe and making 125 or so points which he needs for AO qualies is difficult.

@Sameer ,aided by GS quali appearance's and like this run in Tokyo and some 250s , Singles is more than dbls about 125K compared to 76/78K in Dbls.
All these 3 European's are IH's and think he fancies his chances on the quick surfaces , probably I feel he might take a call after these 3 whether to continue in Europe for ensuing 3 more IH's in Europe or head for 3 weaker one's in Japan.

He did enter Yokohama Challenger in Japan in 3 weeks time. There are 4 weeks of challengers in Japan starting from that week. So, looks like after 2 or 3 weeks in Europe, RamK will play 3or 4 weeks in Japan to end his season. Needs a big run to SF or better at least in 2-3 of those 5 to 7 weeks to try to get inside top 250 by end of the year.

With a not so encouraging outing at the European Indoors, Ram withdraws from the IH at Ortesi, so a mini break before the 4 Challengers in Japan or may be even a plan B of Indian Futures with 65 points at stake in 3 of them, to work as a insurance for 100 odd points falling this year, failing which a huge risk of spiraling below 350..

Indian futures are in same weeks as Japan challengers, only last week happening after Japan challengers. So, RamK not playing there.
He will have to do well in 4 weeks of Japan challengers to keep his ranking at least in top 300.
As a plan B, he can play couple of M25's in Tunisia thereafter.

As mentioned the Futures route was Plan B , ignoring the Japanese 80's and to try Indonesia + India and get the maximum from 90 points on offer at these 4 Futures.

Ultimately took a call on the Japanese leg which is fraught with risks and considering nearly 100 points at stake to protect a deep run or some consistent showing in the 4 Challengers can help out to defend those huge points which are dropping.

At the Adelaide2 250 Ram & his partner face a very formidable Dutch opponents , Robbie Haase / Matwe Middlekoop in the opener and should they prevail the 2nd seeds await them.
So a very difficult task to defend last years 250 points and if unsuccessful will drop below 100 in the dbls ranking having failed to protect Pune points also.

Rohan too is at the same tourney with Ebden and are the 5th seeds and he too will be attempting to protect 250 points of last year.

Timing of tournaments are different this year as compared to last year. So, his Adelaide points are coming off this week and he is #89 in live rankings this week fallen below Saketh as India #2.
Then, his 250 points for Pune fall off on 6th February. So, he will have to try to make up for those points either next week in Adelaide or at Australian open. Then, has another 130 points to defend in next 2 weeks of February which he will have to try to defend in Indian challengers in February.

RamK and his partner start with a very good win.

At Adelaide-2 ATP 250

[R1] Ramkumar Ramanathan (IND) / Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela (MEX) d. Robbie Haase (NED) / Matwe Middlekoop (NED) 63 76(4)

Next,

[R2] Ramkumar Ramanathan (IND) / Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela (MEX) vs. (2) Marcelo Arevelo (CHI ) / Jean-Julien Roger (NED)

Excellent win over a strong pair. That takes Ramkumar back up to 85 in the live doubles rankings (from 89 before this win), just one slot below Saketh. He is the defending champion here (with RB, who ditched him).

This is a very good win over seasoned doubles professionals. Surely with this straight sets win have a good chance against the 2nd seeds whom they face next, but one match at a time
