Groth wins the second set 76(9) after another close tussle. It goes to a decider.

VSP lost in 3 sets. :-(

At $75K Canberra Challenger, Australia

[R1] N Vijay Sundar Prashanth (IND,564) l. Sam Groth (AUS,180) 76(1) 67(8) 36

Groth has huge serve and once his rest of the game started falling in place it was always going to be difficult for VSP. Good fight though against top 200 player.

At least Vijay picked up $780 for his efforts. Would have received nothing had he not got in as a lucky loser.

And $250 for the doubles so he earned around $1000.
But all this prize money to him and the rest of the players is often misleading , after deducting the local taxes the nett amt is lesser than actual prize money , plus they have to contend with Indian Tax , and than factoring the travel, hotel and miscellaneous expenses and you than apply all these expenses to the $1000 , eventually what he has earned would be pittance.

I am sure sure they do not have to pay taxes in both the countries (host country and India). And Indian taxes too have to paid only on their net income ( after deducting expenses incurred towards earning that income) and not on gross prize money. So, I think for lower level players the tax impact would not be too much.

You are right about travel and hotel. I think his $1000 would at least pay for his airfare from India to Australia and a few more expenses.

Yes Sameer , if playing overseas than surely local taxes do apply , even the appearance money is taxed according to the local regulations.
Only if our guys are earning at Indian tournaments they avoid the double taxation.

Maybe. But if that is the case, they would be allowed to claim credit of that tax while paying Indian taxes. So, in effect it nullifies the double tax impact.
