Re: Indians in US College Tennis
I can respond to the DNF issue, but not the rankings. The DNF arises because in college tennis they start all matches simultaneously on adjacent courts. Once one team has accumulated enough points to win the tie, they simply stop the other matches at the end of the game in progress.
Re: Indians in US College Tennis
A hearty congratulations to Sanam for achieving the #1 ranking in college tennis. This proves that he will be a force to be reckoned with on the ATP tour.
Re: Indians in US College Tennis
Slight clarification on the DNF issue ....
Typically, college matches are best of 7 points (1 doubles point decided by 3 doubles matches, and 6 singles point decided by 6 singles matches).
In dual matches (outside of tournament play), all matches are played to a finish, even if the outcome has been determined. So even if a team has won 4-1, the other two singles matches are finished. So it is very rare to find DNFs in dual matches (except maybe by mutual consent of the coaches, weather, etc.).
In tournament play, since so many teams play on the same courts on the same day, matches are stopped as soon as a team has won in order to save time. So if a team wins 4-0, the remaining 3 singles are scored DNF, irrespective of the score. DNFs are not included in a player's ranking.
When calculating rankings for a particular month, the opponents' ranking for that month is taken into account, not his/her ranking when the match was played. So if Sanam's opponents' ranking rose in February and Shabaz's opponents' ranking went down, it would have an effect on their respective rankings.
There is a good, brief explanation on the Sabre Tennis Message board:

The NCAA also uses a system where the best 5 or 6 results are considered, and wins help more than losses hurt.

Re: Indians in US College Tennis
Varma, I think u got ur answers by excellent post by kna about college tennis and ranking .
Re: Indians in US College Tennis
Rashmi Teltumbde will be playing for the University of Virginia starting this fall. I hope she continues the great Indian tradition established there by Somdev and Sanam. The Virgina women's team is not as highly ranked as the men's team, but they are better than what they were a few years ago. I think they reached a ranking in the 20s or 30s in 2009-2010.
Re: Indians in US College Tennis
Here are the initial rankings of some Indians in U.S. college tennis. Early season rankings can be deceptive, and tend to stabilize as the season wears on.

10. Sanam Singh (Virginia)
92. Jeevan Neduncheziyan (Washington)
Women:
32. Sanaa Bhambri (North Carolina State)
53. Sandhya Nagaraj (North Carolina State)

Yep, I am also looking forward to how Karunuday will do. Would be nice if he can get into the top-75 or higher in the freshman year. Top-50 or higher will be great. Jay

Re: Indians in US College Tennis
Karunuday did not seem to play any college events in the fall of this year but won some kind of a prize money event in December 2010 in which all the Illini players played among others (including professional player Ryler DeHeart). Among those that Karunuday beat was current college #11 Dennis Nevolo, so top-50 looks very achievable for Karunuday once he starts playing regularly...

Re: Indians in US College Tennis
this guy is the real find of the year. will be interesting to watch his progress in the next 3-4 years.
Re: Indians in US College Tennis
Feb 14th rankings of Indians in Division I college tennis:
Men:
13 Sanam Singh (University of Virginia)
66 Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan (University of Washington)
Women:
55 Sandhya Nagaraj (North Carolina State)
88 Anamika Bhargava (Pepperdine)
I'm not sure why Sanaa Bhambri is not ranked. She is winning regularly for North Carolina State, was ranked earlier, and even beat #28 Danielle Lao of Southern California.
Anyone know who Anamika Bhargava is? I listed her because she has an Indian name, but I'm not sure if she is a US citizen or Indian.

Definitely a US citizen of Indian origin. From Pepperdine player profile:
Anamika Bhargava's Profile 2 fans.

An older profile. Interesting how some things change as one grows up.

Thanks, Atithee. I was too lazy to do the research myself. Shame on me.

I have come to regard this forum as a family where we help each other out. We all feel lazy somedays so there is no reason to be ashamed. Plus we all have have a knack for hunting the same information more efficiently than others so it is OK to post a query such as yours.
