sameerph wrote:Agreed, Suresh. That is actually applicable to many of our players. They just do not appear desperate enough to try to play as many tournaments as possible and improve their rankings and go to a higher level.

Take for instance the case of VSP. Last year he had such a great start to the year -qualifying in at Chennai open and winning a couple of futures titles to take his ranking close to 350. He had a great chance to take his ranking to a level where he can start competing in challengers. Instead he went to Europe to play some club tennis and missed 4 months of action ( only playing a few tough ATP qualies over the week end.) and his ranking has now dropped.

They need to pick the opportunities at the right time and show some desperation/ enterprise in schedulling. That way I like RamK's attitude in playing a lots and lots of tournaments cris-crossing across Europe and Asia.
Finances might be an issue. RamK has the required finances, unlike the others mentioned!

Yes, that could be the case. Still, if they are interested making a pro career they need to take their chances. There were a lot of tournaments in Asia for last few months- in China, Japan, Guam or places like Nigeria where the cost of travel and stay would be relatively lower. But, one hardly sees 1-2 players turning up at these tournaments ( or none at all).

There being not many tournaments this year in India has further aggravated the problem for these players .

Vishnu has mow made it into the main draw of next week's $50K(+H) Fergana challenger. I think this is the first challenger main draw he will be playing after a long time outside India.

I am not sure if any of the other Indian men will be playing qualies at Fergana.

But, there is a simultaneous $25K womens challenger being held there next week where Ankita Raina and Prerna Bhambri is in the main draw and Natasha Palha may also just sneak in. So, we will open a thread for this common challenger once the draws are out.

Vishnu is up against 5th see DuckHee Lee of Korea in the first round. A tough match where he will need his big serves to fire if he has to have a chance of causing an upset which is possible

How I wish he had instead gone to the UK to check out his chances on grass. Any way good luck at Fergana.

Vishnu just won his SF match with partner Matsui. :D

At $50K+H Fergana Challenger, Uzbekistan

[SF] Vishnu VARDHAN/Toshide MATSUI 7-6 3-6 10-5 [3] Andrei VASILEVSKI / Yaruslau SHYLA (BLR)

Frankly, Vishnu should just concentrate on becoming a doubles specialist. I don't see him winning anything big in singles.
