I presume he is hoping to get a wildcard to the Olympics. Maybe Bopanna-Paes, given their success in Croatia. But if course we can decide at this time next year...

Absolute legend. Not just that his peripheral vision is great. He doesn't need to move his eyes even an iota for that vision. His eyes are just not moving at all, but his hands are moving to the right spots. How is this even possible? Un-friggin-believable. Even more proof that he is the greatest all-around athlete we may have ever produced. Good at everything. I am sure he must have been among our most talented football player, basketball point guards and top sprinters too, when he was in his teens. He had to pick some sport and went to tennis.

Leander posted a terrific video reminiscing about Frejus on his FB page. Apparently he spent many months practicing on clay with a specialist coach, who began by telling him he needed different shoes to slide on the clay...

Yes he did. Even went and played on clay in S. America, iirc. He did make an honest attempt at claycourt tennis, but quickly dropped it and decided he didn't have the temperament to play in that style.

Strangely his first GS win was on clay.... Or was it at the US open after Olympics?

Your original memory was correct.
His first GS singles win was in the '96 US Open right after the Olympics and he was a set and a break up on Agassi in the second round before imploding after some antics by Agassi. In the '97 US Open, he went to the 3rd round and was up two sets to one to #23 Pioline before losing in the 3rd round.
His first win at the French Open was in 1997.

PKB he was up a set and 4-0 it means two breaks up against Agasi on that day '96.... Next year against Piolin he was up 2-1 before losing last two sets...But the match which was close to my heart has always been 1993 Freujs...
