Rohan Bopanna thread... (at Newport ATP qualies)

Post by jayakris »

Based on what we had heard earlier, he was expected to play two Asian challengers. The $25K+H in Japan next week (Mar 3rd) and the $25K+H in Vietnam the week after. He will almost surely be in the qualies at Japan if he goes there, but he might make the main draw for Vietnam I would think. I have not see the acceptance lists yet.

Rohan Bopanna thread... (at Newport ATP qualies)

Post by jayakris »

Here is the link to the entry list for the Japan challenger kept at the Japanese Federation site (which is strictly in Japanese, as the rude guys who have been running that site for years have been unaware that the world outside Japan also have an interest in the "international" events they run. It is one of the very few national tennis sites that just does not seem to care of the world at all)

At least keep a damn pdf draw in English like they do everywhere else!

http://www.tennis.or.jp/jta/event/allja ... ntry_s.pdf

My acrobat does not open the document due to a CMap error. If any of you have Japanese fontpack installed and can figure out Japanese, let me know!

Jay I loaded that page and it's basically an entry form. I'll try and find a list on the site in the meanwhile.

So Rohan is #8 in the alternates list. By next week he should move up a couple of spots atleast. I guess he will be seeded in the qualies though but might not make the main draw.

A $15K futures event would have helped in that regard

I guess Andy Ram is a WC

Here is the draw for Rohan at the Tokyo challenger.

(4)Rohan Bopanna (IND) vs (WC)Mashashi Yoshikawa (JPN)
Kenji Fujiwara (JPN) vs Yusuke Miyake (JPN)
Ti Chen (TPE) vs Tohru Watanabe (JPN)
(7)Satoshi Iwabuchi (JPN) vs Mikhail Razumovski (RUS)

Pretty good chance to qualify for him. That is the benefit of being ranked in the top-400 area, because you end up getting seeded among the top-4 in the qualies and you don't need to upset somebody to make the main draw ..

R1
(4)Rohan Bopanna (IND) d. (WC)Mashashi Yoshikawa (JPN) 6-4 6-2
Kenji Fujiwara (JPN) d. Yusuke Miyake (JPN) 6-1 6-0
Ti Chen (TPE) d. Tohru Watanabe (JPN) 6-0 6-0
(7)Satoshi Iwabuchi (JPN) d. Mikhail Razumovski (RUS) 6-2 6-1

R2
(4)Rohan Bopanna (IND) d. Kenji Fujiwara (JPN) 6-2 7-5
(7)Satoshi Iwabuchi (JPN) d. Ti Chen (TPE) 6-1 6-3

R3 QLFR round to be played tommorow Japan time. Late today my time :)
(4)Rohan Bopanna (IND) vs (7)Satoshi Iwabuchi (JPN)

Satoshi Iwabuchi is the same guy who came to India earlier this year for the futures. There he
Reached the final in Lucknow
Defeated Vijay Kannan 62 62 but lost to Lobanov in round 2 in Delhi.

So he is no slouch but these are matches that Rohan should win. Ofcourse the crowd will be completely behind Iwabuchi for sure so it will be a difficult environment for Rohan.

(7)Satoshi Iwabuchi (JPN) bt (4)Rohan Bopanna (IND) 76(3) 63

Rohan should have won this match. He is #2 in the LL list so he can only make the main draw if there are two withdrawals. Unlikely though.

He is also playing in the doubles there

R1 doubles

BOPANNA, Rohan(IND)/MATSUI, Toshihide(JPN) vs HEMMES JR., Fred(NED)/VALENT, Roman(SUI)

Will be a tough match as Valent was #1 and Hemmes #3 in the singles qualifying. Neither made it to the main draw though.

Well hopefully they do well win here but I was hoping for some singles points for Rohan.

Well Rohan is at the Vietnam HoChiMinh City challenger. He got a WC to the main draw. The draw has been extremely kind to him as it usually is

R1: Rohan Bopanna vs #1 Werner Eschauer(AUT,134)
Well if he manages to pull this one off he should have a relatively easy path after.

Rohan Bopanna thread... (at Newport ATP qualies)

I'm copying from a match report by SteveG (different from the steveG of steveg tennis apparantly)
Steve wrote:Just a last quick note regarding the doubles qualifyings : Bopanna teamed up with Hemmes against a Vietnamese team in the first round of the qualifyings. I have been positively surprised by Bopanna / Hemmes attitude during this match. There was no doubt they would be winning. Therefore, Bopanna from the very beginning slowed down his serve compared to his usual speed. They also slowed down the game to make the Vietnamese pair play. The four of them had some good points.
All in all, the four of them had fun and the crowd was pleased about the show. Bopanna / Hemmes have been the only ones to have this attitude and I feel this should be known. Great sportsmanship from the both of them :)
So it seems that RB/FH have qualified for the doubles MD. Don't know what the score was but it's good to see that were sporting and did not try and blow the locals off the court and gave the home crowd something to cheer about and have a little fun at the same time. Hopefully the crowd supports him in his match on Tuesday(singles match scheduled for Tues) when he will need it.

 Correction  I just got PM'ed by Steve and apparantly

The score was 61 63 in the first round of the qualifyings.
To qualify in the main draw, Rohan / Fred still have one match to win, against Rodolphe CARDART (FRA) / Franck MOSER (GER).
