Big upset! But we will usually know if any upset was a true upset only based on what the player does in the next round. So, go Rishabh!

Actually, though he lost in the next round, looking at the 46 57 score against a guy at around 850 (above him by 100 spots), it looks like he is at least playing at around his rank or better. So the upset earlier was at least partially helped by his own playing. Hope the guy gets better and goes up into top-500 later. Let me just take this as a positive week from our man.

Rishab Agarwal was ranked close to top 50 in his US college career un 2016 and in NCAA championships final lost in second round to Australian Vucic in a third set tie break. Vucic has gone on to reach top 200 and qualfied for French open last year and had a win over Prajnesh.

So, Rishab should clearly be able to play at least at top 300 level if not better. His pro career was set back by injuries and hope he is getting back to his real level now. Got 3 qualfiying wins this week and his first top 400 win this week. Will keep a watch on him this year.

20 year old Siddhant Banthia is playing in Tunisia for the past couple of weeks during his sumner break from US college stint.

Last week he lost in the final qualifying round but made the doubles final along with another Indian origin player from New Zealand, Ajit Rai.

This week, Siddhnat qualified thru to main draw and upset the second seed in the first round.

At M15 Monastir 22A, Tunisia

[Q1] (6) Siddhant Banthia (IND,1266) bye
[Q2] (6) Siddhant Banthia (IND,1266) d. Ezequiel Simonit (ARG,2816) 57 64 10-8
[Q3] (6) Siddhant Banthia (IND,1266) d. (9) Lucio Carnevalle (ARG,1502) 63 63

[R1] (Q) Siddhant Banthia (IND,1266) d. (2) Thomas Fancutt (AUS,573) 76(2) 64

Next,

[R2] (Q) Siddhant Banthia (IND,1266) vs. (Q) Mauri Di Maio (ITA,1460)

Rishab Agarwal has been playing in Greece futures in past couple of weeks and qualified thru to main draw in both weeks but lost in first round of main draw in both.

Nice win for Siddhanth Banthia. But he needs to consolidate and win at least another couple of rounds to make it count.

Banthia has had a few highlights at Wake Forest (where he is now a junior). In his sophomore year, he beat #42, although he himself finished the year ranked 100 among college players (down from 67 at the beginning of spring). This (his junior) year, he has moved up to playing 2nd singles (from being the #6 player last year and the start of this year), so he has clearly improved.

It's quite surprising that Banthia was playing #6 singles at Wake Forest during his first two years at college, and only made it to #2 in his junior year. A huge contrast to Somdev DevVarman, who made the NCAA final in his first year (or was it second) and won the title in his 3rd and 4th year at University of Virginia. Somdev had a junior ranking of 40, not too different from Siddhant Banthia's 41. This kid has had a strange (non-) progression, after winning the "Race to Wimbledon" when he was 13 or 14, and finally making it to the Wimbledon juniors when he was around 17, but generally failing to live up to his potential all along the way.

I do not think Siddhant's junior career can be compared to Somdev. Siddhant's ranking of 41 was early season when many of those eligible for junior in the earlier year drop off and he did not have too many wins at grade 1 level while Somdev had quite a few of them. Also Somdev won a futures title in India at 19 before he went for his college stint. So, he was a much better player when he started his college stint and I think in first year at college itself Somdev showed where he is heading.

Anyway, Siddhant could not follow up on his R1 upset.

At M15 Monastir 22A, Tunisia

[R2] (Q) Siddhant Banthia (IND,1266) l. (Q) Mauri Di Maio (ITA,1460) 26 02 retd.

Somdev had a sudden great run at the end of the year that he was 18, winning the Asian closed championship at the end of the year. That is what got his ranking up, and then he won a Futures early the next year (in Kolkata IIRC).

Banthia wasn't in the same category, I agree, but that reflected the fact that his career had been badly mismanaged from the time he was 13, and his potential simply hadn't been harnessed properly. The difference is showing now, starkly.

Harsh Mankad had a top junior ranking of 61, but he made much more of a mark in US college tennis in his freshman and sophomore year than Banthia.

Both Harsh and Somdev came and stayed with us when they were each 17 and had my wife's fantastic turkey kheema. Now you know the secret to their success :)

What an impressive win for Siddhant Banthia! Duckhee Lee is a seriously good player. Even better (in fact MUCH higher quality) than last week's win over Thomas Fancutt. But now he must build on this upset by winning 2-3 more rounds -- or, best of all, winning the title!
