nice pictures puneet !!
i am amazed by the quality of the courts which look perfect and even, almost like wimbledon
a far cry from the dusty & uneven courts which are dished out nowadays.

What about Indian Women in GS or other big tournamnets. Are there anyone else other than Sania, Nirupama Sanjeev, Nirupama Mankad to represent India??

Jaideep Mukherjea, Premjit Lall and Ashok Amritraj also made the Wimbledon junior singles final. Leander Paes made the AO junior singles final when he was 16+. Ramesh Krishnan won the Wimbledon and French Open junior singles titles in the same year, and was runner-up at the US Open.

As most folks distinguish between singles and doubles titles, just to clarify Sania's slam title was in doubles while all the others discussed are singles titles or finals.

Vijay Amritraj and Karan Rastogi reached slam singles semi-finals.

I really didn't keep track of junior doubles. But I know that Mahesh Bhupathi & Gaurav Natekar made the Wimby junior doubles final.
Sania (with Sanaa Bhambri) also made the French Open junior doubles semi-final a few weeks before winning the junior Wimbledon doubles title.

Hello,

A new member here. I'm very much interested in the history of lawn tennis in India. I was wondering whether anyone might be able to post a list of the winners (and even the runners-up) in the men's and women's singles events at the All-India Championships and the National Lawn Tennis Championships of India, from the earliest years to the present time.

I realize this is a tough ask, but any information would be greatly appreciated. (I can also be messaged.)

Hello,

I'm looking for a list of the finalists and results from the final of the Indian National Lawn Tennis Championships from 1983 up until 2012.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

T.K. Ramanathan decided to build a court in his backyard so he could coach his son, and soon Krishnan was beating older players in tournaments. He made special mention of the players in Madras who helped him improve. “I always say I am a product of competition,” he said. “When I came, Seshadri was the best player here. Then there were Vishnu Mohan, Apparao and Udayakumar, who could be compared to the best from any part of the country. Losing to them and then learning to beat them made me a better player,” he said.
Apparao - father of namratha Apparao may be?!

A Namratha Apparao was star of the College of William and Mary in 1986 and 1987. Their alumni notes show she graduated in 1989 having made the following NCAA tournament appearances:

1986:
Singles
Namratha Appa-Rao, W&M d. Laura Garcia, So. Fla.; 6-0, 1-6, 6-2
Susanna Lee, Brigham Young d. Namratha Appa-Rao, W&M; 3-6, 6-3, 6-2

1987:
Singles
Harges, Southern Calif. d. Namratha Appa-Rao, W&M; 6-0, 6-3

Another search shows a Namratha Apparao below. Not sure if she is the same Namratha.

Namratha Apparao, Membership Services Coordinator, Flight Safety Foundation, 601 Madison St., Ste. 300, Alexandria, VA 22314-1756; 703-739-6700; FAX 703-739-6708.

Her official email address is also available. If someone wants to contact her and invite her to the forum, it may be worthwhile.

Interesting that Anu Peshawaria, her contemporary, went on to be a supreme court lawyer, and is now advertising her services in Bay Area.

Anu Peshawaria is the sister of Kiran Bedi (nee Peshawaria), who went on to become one of India's most prominent police officers (and a trailblazer for women in the police force). Both were national women's champions, Kiran competing well against Nirupama Mankad (nee Vasanth) and Susan Das in the early-1970s, and Anu later in the decade (and early-1980s). Namratha Apparao was national champion for several years in the 1980s (presumably before going to college in the US).

At Wimbledon in 1947, a few weeks before Independence (and Partition), there were SIX Indians in the men's singles -- Dilip Bose, Sumant Mishra, Iftikar Ahmed, Ghaus Mohammed Khan, Jimmy Mehta and Man Mohan Lal -- ALL of whom won at least one round in the main draw. The first three made R3 (the last 32).

Partition almost certainly was ruinous for the quality of Indian tennis...!
